Lacy's mom heart broken and confused
 
AS you know Lacy had her puppies yesterday. The first puppy took a while to be born (butt first) I help pull the puppy out, and she is ok. Lacy waited about 2.5 hrs. before puppy number started to be born. She was head first and came fairly quickly. (about 5 minutes) but was not breathing. We gave puppy brisk rub down and cpr for about 15 minutes, but puppy didn't make it. Now I feel I should have done something else or failed to do the right thing. Puppy was about same size as puppy #1 and was moving before it was born. Any suggestions? Should I have removed membrane from puppy as it was being born?

I am so terribly sorry. I have no clue about breeding or whelping pups, but it has to be heartbreaking to lose one. Hopefully, some of our knowledgeable breeders will have some answers for you.

Congratulations to you and Lacy on your baby that made it. I pray that all goes well and we will have the opportunity to see that little one grow up healthy and strong. God bless you and comfort you.

Also I just took Lacy out to potty and she still has a green discharge. Is this normal.?

After birth fluids will be greenish-black going to straw colored. As long as she's not hemorhaging, she's okay. As far as the pup goes, please don't blame yourself. So many things can go wrong. Maybe the lungs had not developed properly and could not function. As far as removing the sack before the pup is fully born, it's best to keep it in tack until the placenta is delivered as well unless there is trouble with the placenta. Removing the sack early would not have helped a pup that was unable to have normal breath functions. Did you "sling" the pup? That's the only other thing that I can think of that you might have done, CPR will help if the pup stayed in the birth canal too long and it aspirated placental fluid. Enjoy your pup. It's so fun to watch them grow!

Thanks for the reply. Yes we did sling the puppy before giving it cpr. Boy is just don't know if I will breed again? This is so heart breaking. Also this was Lacy's first litter.

Breeding is definitely not for the faint of heart! The hardest part for me is rehoming bitches when you retire them or when they turn out too small to breed. I may end up with 15 dogs by the time I get the champion that I'm trying to create! Putting your bitch at risk with each pregnancy is scary as well. Face it, it takes a certain amount of detachment to do this. It's definitly not for everyone!

This is the sad part about breeding...I have seen puppies moving in the womb one minute and come out dead in the next...if you worked on her for 15 mins with no response, then she was gone...there is "dead" and "really dead"..when they are "really dead", they are not coming back.

You pulled the butt first out as you should have..I pull the head firsts if theya re taking too long..I do not remove the sac as they can aspirate..and they are still getting oxegen from the cord as human baby...what I would have done is given a shot to speed up whelping after the first puppy..I perfer no more then an 60 to 90 mins between pups...that is when many pups are lost.. I reviewed your posts...when did you see the first signs of labor?...you posted at 6:49am it had started..was it strong pushing...? You posted she was very wet at 12:43..was she contracting strongly then? Posts says her water broker at 3PM..but she was very wet at 12 or so...in hindsight, I would say the labor went a bit too long for the last puppy...since it was her first litter, the next may go much faster, if not I would keep Oxyie on hand.

I was wondering if you can only get oxy from your vet? Can you get it anywhere else? If its only from your vet, will they readily let you purchase it?

I'm so sorry you lost #2:( It's wonderful that you still have one and I hope all goes well with baby and Mommy.,

This is one reason I'm glad Lucy is bigger than the standard. If she had been small enough (under 7 lbs) I would've considered it and I know I would've been heartbroken had anything happened.

Vets who are breeder friendly and know the breeder is responsible will sell a bottle...some let the breeder take a few shots home the week before whelping incase.. It is cheap and a bottle used to last me a year..plus I gave alot away...

PS..a bitch does not need to be oversized to whelp well...size is no gurarantee all will go well either..I perfer a 5 to 6 pounder..I have has as many sections on a larger girl as a smaller one...seriously!

I think I'll ask my vet with my next litter and see if he will then , just in case. He's used it on my last two litters, and the last litter it would have saved me a trip to the vet. Thanks for the info !

The only bitch I have ever lost during a section or after was an 8 pounder..one of my biggest girls I have owned...
