| Gotta ask about declaws and docked tails? I was going to buy a puppy 14 weeks old and happen to ask if her declaws were removed and tail docked? She said no why wouldnt a breeder do that? Is it mean to have that done now at 14 weeks? Sorry but in my opinion I like the docked tail maybe I should move on find one that is docked and declawed! Rory |

| I purchased my latest Yorkie from Budapest, Hungary. She came w/ dewclaws and w/ a tail. I will have the tail docked when she is closer to a year so that her weight is up, and she'll most likely be anesthitized anyway at the same time so that they can remove the three disiduous teeth I suspect will still be intact at that time. The tail is cute, but not my style. And since I'll hopefully be showing her-if she continues to mature as nicely as she is-it won't be quite as difficult for me to do so. |

| You can get her dew claws removed and her tail docked when you get her spayed. They will have to put her to sleep at that time anyway so they coiuld just do it all I would think. RORY! OMG! I can't wait to hear ALL about this little girl! Where is she located? |

| the older a dog is the more serious the procedure is. i have one that has a dew claw she came to me as an adult so i talked to my vet about removing it and he said it would be almost like amputating a finger because there is a major blood vessel that runs through there and that it would be very painful for her so we opted not to put her through that. the only problem i have with it is that it curls and is hard to trim. sometimes they can get to long and get inbedded into the leg so i try to keep it short

| NO, the decision to dock or crop isn't a cruel one, I don't think. I mean, she wouldn't be in any more pain that she would be for a Ovarian-Hysterectomy (spay) I'd imagine. There are MANY more major blood vessles and nerves in that entire abdominal area than there are in a dew claw (often times there is only a small blood supply to the toe and there isn't even a knuckle present) and in the tail. I agree that PREFERABLY it be done just a few days after birth, but if not, there's no reason imo to subject them to it if you choose to. And I'm not willing to get into the great debate over to spay/not to spay w/ anyone right now. With the way I've been acting the past day or two (pregnancy hormones?) I just know I'll read something wrong and snap. Since I don't agree w/ spaying/neutering for my own dogs until they're at least 16 months of age, this point is mute anyway (some people would suggest to have this procedure done at the same time of the spay). I just wait until they need to go in for deciduous teeth extraction and if that's not needed, then I'll do it when they weigh a little more and it's safer to put them under. Don't feel bad if you choose to do a procedure that is considered "unneccesary" to some. |

| Oh, and I don't know what the breeder is charging you, but I'd be suprised if she brought the price down, just because she didn't remove the dew claws or dock the tail. But like you said, it can't hurt to ask, and it may encourage her to do so next time just a few days after their born and be done w/ it. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Personally, I would not do it at such a late age. Tails and claws are usually done between 3-5 days after birth. In MY opnion, it seems very cruel to do it to an adult dog. From what I have been told, it is more painful and recovery time is much longer. Tail can take weeks to heal while doing it to a pup just takes a couple of days. In may other countries, it is against the law to dock tails and claws. I know there are groups here in America that are trying to get this law passed here, as well.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | reading up on some past threads on this same subject, someone suggested that if you're going to have an adult's tail docked, have your vet do it by laser method. It's suppose to be less painful for the dog.

| Yeah, there are groups that are trying to get it passed here and it'll never happen. I'd bank my entire life savings on it. I'm certainly pro-choice when it comes to this...obviously. You'll always be able to get around it, just like they do overseas. I've purchased dogs from the Ukraine; Jamaica and from Hungary all of which are breeds that standard prefers a docked tail, dew claw removal and potentially a cropped ear and while illegal in ALL of those countries, it still gets done. Many of the breeders have taken courses to learn to do just tail docking and dew claw removals and they do it at home. Which is not illegal. The one thing I wouldn't do, is buy a puppy that had a ear cropping done from the home. Never. Even if the person was a veterinarian himself. It just seems like that kind of art should take place in a more sterile environment w/ proper equipment around if the anesthesia fails. Many times dew claws and tails are removed w/ no anesthesia and that's why I think the two are very different for me. Kinda like circumcisions. |
