the older a dog is the more serious the procedure is. i have one that has a dew claw she came to me as an adult so i talked to my vet about removing it and he said it would be almost like amputating a finger because there is a major blood vessel that runs through there and that it would be very painful for her so we opted not to put her through that. the only problem i have with it is that it curls and is hard to trim. sometimes they can get to long and get inbedded into the leg so i try to keep it short
