Amniotic fluid leaking is fine, green before a puppy is reason to be concerned. The leaking fluid from the bag makes the "puppy" smaller so birthing easier, but if all the fluid comes out then the puppy needs to be born sooner (like within 10 or 15 minutes). Just drops means there is still plenty of fluid. |
Emergency Vet...20 mins...I will feather her again. She does not seem to be in pain...just a little weak in between contractions. Durring contractions sh is like a bull... |
The bulge looks closer in this pic. Does the feathering seem to produce stronger contractions? |
Do you have any Nutrical or Nutristat you can give her a little dab of to keep her strength up? Once this first puppy comes the rest usually come quicker and easier. |
no nutrical but she just had another good strong but short contraction while I was feathering her do I continue to feather during contractions? |
If you feel the contractions are strong than it isn't necessary. Is she pushing during contractions like hunching up? Her gums are still a healthy pink? Are the contractions bringing the bulge any closer to delivery? |
I have been feathering and she has had two contractions 9:20 p.m. and 9:24 p.m. these were definitely stroger she stayed laying down and I could see her pushing the side of her tummy rose pretty high with the last contraction she seems to enjoy the feathering shes relaxing in between contractions |
Keep doing the feathering then it won't hurt if it's not bothering her - it's like when you are moving your finger to tell someone to come to you. |
when she pushes the bulge comes very close she just had another strong contraction these in the past twenty min has been alot stronger than the ones before...shes been doing two pushes with each of the last contractions one soft and one hard |
Is her tail moving up with the contractions? This is an indication she is in the pushing stage and the puppy should present within 10 to 20 minutes at the most. |
yes she is laying down and her tail is moving up and her body is scrunching together I begin feathering her again |
with the contractions she pushes and it looks like the puppy is lamost there and then she just give up |
Is the puppy making any progress closer or does it keep slipping back up? No more fluids leaking? The puppy might be too large for her, but usually Mom would be showing more distress than what you are describing. |
There is a certain amount of stretching that needs to happen before the puppy presents (in humans called crowning, but we just get episiotomies (however you spell it) so we don't have to go through the stretching. Has the puppy ever come close enough to open the vagina at all? |
Since the activepushing just started when I posted it I hope everything is okay. She just had another strong contraction...she pushed and I held her tail up and kinda very gently pulled her vulva up with it because I saw the buldge was less than 1/4 inch away. The contraction ended and she went back inti her box to rest. BTW-now she is restimg in her box and coming out with each contraction...I think the puppy could have opened the inside with the last one but on the nside close... |
It sounds like she is making progress and is not in distress. Keep feathering. |
she is pushing and it is coming close and then end of contraction slipping back in |
is there something we can give her besides nutrical? I started feathering her again now |
How often is she having contractions? The puppy might be breach - feet first delivery is normal and fine, but sometimes the legs are tucked up underneath the belly and they can't be delivered vaginally. From what you are describing she is in active labor and a puppy should be produced within 20 minutes (we're past that). 1 hour in active pushing labor would definitely be tops for me with a Mom so small or sooner if she seems to be in any terrible pain or contractions stop. |
You can give her Karo corn syrup. If you don't have that you can give honey. I really don't like honey because I have read that honey can contain bacteria, but for an adult I would be okay with it just not puppies. |
something is trying to push out but it is going in between the vulva and the tail every time she pushes...then it clams back in a little...you think I should take her to the vet? My gut feeling tells me a few more and she will push it out. Contractions were 5-6 mins now they are 6-7 mins |
she is not pushing the entire contraction now she is just giving little pushes but the puppy is almost there I can feel it now she just want to stay in her box |
I thought they were more like every 3 or 4 minutes so you're probably right she needs just a little more time. It really doesn't sound like she is in any distress - gums still healthy pink? If you don't have any of the "sugars" do you have vanilla ice cream? |
Her daddy just left us to the market to buy karo corn syrup or vanilla ice cream. Something is right there on the inside... |
what would distress signs be |
feathering...almost there...i think i got iyt ow |
it was almost out...maybe next contraction |
the bulge is big and the vulva is smaller i think because it is stretch iver the bulge uh oh another contraction |
pale gums, blackgreen discharge, heavy fresh blood, drop in temperature (usual whelping temperature is about 99 degrees) so anything in the 97s would be unusual at this point, weakness, muscle tremors, or becoming stiff. Are the contractions still 7 minutes apart? I think I would be making plans and getting ready to take her in though. Don't panic, I'm sure everything is fine, but it's always better to be safe. |
Come on Trini, push baby! |
