| Expecting Okay we went to the vet the other day, and he comfirmed that Roxi is expecting. He said that he could for sure feel two puppies. We are so excited. This will be our first litter. I've done tons of research, but I'm still really nervous. What do all of you do the second half of your dogs pregnancy? We already let Roxi eat as much as she wants with a dish of food offered at all times. And I've started giving her about 2 tbls of cottage cheese twice a day and a half of a boild egg twice a day (one whole egg a day). She isn't a very big Yorkie (4 3/4 lb) (dad is only 2 3/4 lb). What would be any of your recommendations? Any advise is appreciated.

| I feed a premium puppy food only. As for calcium, I do not supplement at all, until whelping, then I do cottage cheese, yogurt and eggs. This is what I do. I'm not as experienced as some but very researched Hope this helps. |

| Silk is six and has been on puppy food all her life so i didn't switch her as the vet said it was okay and she was in good health sooo when she got pregnant, I added a couple of smaller meals during the day and about two weeks before whelping, I started adding one Tablespoon of cottage cheese per day to one of her meals. She has always gotten half an egg a day too so I didn't have to change anything. Since she only had one pup, the vet told me she is getting enough calcuim. Also, her milk didn't come in until her actual due date which was three days after she wwhelped so I made a pudding that is supposed to make the milk come down and also gave her two teaspoons of dark beer per Debbie jenson's advice. So i don't know for sure what made her milk come down. the vet had told me she would not have any at all so I fed round the clock for two days to keep the puppy alive and she is doing great now and is fat. |

| I put my pregnant Moms on a high quality puppy food for the added protein and calcium. About two weeks before whelping I start giving about a heaping teaspoon of cottage cheese mixed in the dry three times a day. I never give calcium supplements and if I feed extra things it's boiled chicken, but the majority of what they consume should be the puppy food so they will get all the nutrients they require. I think a whole egg every day is too much - not that egg is bad, but since she is so little that is too large of a percentage of her total dietary intake. |

| I feed puppy food to pregnant girls too. Plus I give table scraps of beef we have, cottage cheese, an occasional egg . They like being spoiled with the table food...........they like the "junk Food" table scraps since they dont get much of it at any other time. Good luck on your puppies! |

| Thanks for the advice. I will cut back the cottage cheese and switch to maybe only a half and egg a day (she just loves the eggs). We are just so excited. We showed Roxi this summer and she earned her Champion (she's registared APR). And we've started to show our male APR, although he is dual registared APR and AKC. I'm hoping to maybe show him AKC next year if I can find some shows that aren't too far away. He turns a year in September and can't reach champion until he's a year. I've really liked showing and have meet quit a few people that show both AKC and APR. Using the APR shows to help keep their dogs in practice. I'm glad I've started with the APR shows because they are pretty relaxed, and help me and the dogs get use to the whole "show thing" before going to a big show. Thanks for the help.

| Doing cottage cheese prior to whelping can actually bring on Eclampsia, instead of prevent it. You can give it after. Quote:

| OMG! I didn't know that and definately don't want that to happen. We will DC the cottage cheese ASAP. I will have a welping box set up for Roxi; however, since she sleeps in our bed do you think she will try to welp there? Anyone out there have dogs that sleep in their bed that have had pups?

| It's pretty likely she will WANT to whelp on your bed, so it's up to you to be alpha dog here, and make her understand that's not where she and the puppies are going to live. I have whelped on a bed, and a couch before, because it was easier for me than getting in the floor, LOTS OF POTTY PADS to protect, LOL.. anyways, after the whelping, mommy and babies went to their set up whelping area.. a Zippy type enclosure is good for mommies who don't want to stay in their whelping boxes...or a puppy play pen that they can't escape from. One thing to do is go ahead and set it up about a week or so prior, so she can get used to the fact that that is where she's going to be. Quote:

| No one has mentioned it yet, but I also took mine on short walks everyday, even if it was just in the house. I wanted her to have plenty of rest, but also wanted her to have good muscle tone. Also the last half I didn't let her jump up or down on anything. She did beautifully.

| I don't know if a puppy play pen (or even a person play pen) will work. We put up a four foot fence in our back yard for our dogs, and when let out Roxi promptly runs to the fence and climbs over (we use to have a 3 ft fence and she would jump it). When we would leave the house we use to lock her in the kitchen (with 3 baby gates stacked in the door way), but she chewed a hole in the gate. I hate to stick her in a cage, so maybe I will have to start locking her in our store room. I have been taking her for a couple of short walks a day. Not too far though. Just enough for her to strech her legs on potty.
