Wanting to breed and new at it. Pls help Hi my name is Carolynne and I live in Florida. I have a akc registered Yorkie named Wintson. He is weighs under three pounds. He has akc papers, and it has show dogs in his line. I have been reading about unproven stud. I was wondering if I can find a proven female who is willing to breed with him. One test we had to make sure he did not have (since some yorkies can get this and pass it down) is he is free and clear of having a shunt (sp?). I also would like to know the ropes. Do I need to get a license, anything else? Can someone kindly help me. Thank you so much Carolynne

stud He may not have liver shunt..and it is good to know for HIS well being..but it does not mean he can not sire pups with a liver shunt...you need to know his bloodline and the genetic problems/faults with in that line..best wishes

Thank you for replying, I have even more ques now =0) Hi and thank you for your reply. Okay I was told the parents were genetic tested. Should I still get him tested as well?? How do I go about that? I have his papers for his line (thats how I know there were champion show dogs in his line). I still don't know how to go about this. Should I call the vet and ask for some type of testing? I have his papers with the info on the dogs in his line. Where do I go now. thank you so much carolynne

Donating YT 14K Club Member | "Okay I was told the parents were genetic tested." I don't know about genetic testing, but I do know that AKC requires a DNA test if a male is bred more than 3 times a year. A champion dog doesn't mean that he will throw champions. Same as humans...2 beautiful people can have an ugly kid and vice versa. With having a stud dog, you want to make sure that the females are free from any Venerial (spelling) diseases. Yes, dogs can get VD and pass it along to other dogs and eventually it will sterilize the dogs. Make sure that whatever females your dog is bred to has a paper signed by a vet that states they are free from any diseases. Another thing you want to consider is what kind of fee you are going to charge. The going rate around my area up to Houston is $500 or pick of the litter. Even though you can breed a daughter back to the dad (in-breeding) you should only do this if you are experienced enough in breeding. You can bring out very strong points this way or very weak points...genetics. My male bred with my friend's female. Both were first timers and even though it probably was a little frustrating for both, they bred successfully and she whelped 5 puppies. Good luck! |

testing When you see a breeder post..there are alot..ask them what genetic tests they have done. AKC DNA has nothing to do with health..of course it should be done, but is used to ID a sire, not his genetic health. I have been told by Cornell vets there are no routine genetic tests a breeder can do. You can check the dog for good knees and eyes etc, but not run a genetic test to see if they carry a recessive gene for luxating petella's or RA.(would cost a breeder 1000's) Champion in front of a dogs name on the pedigree means the dog has 15 points, but it does not mean it is even of good quality..I know that sounds odd...but champion is a fair indication the dog is above average. I am hard on this type stuff and unless the champions are in the first or second generation I do not consider it a top of the line pedigree. IT only takes one generation of bad breeding to wreck 5. I do not mean to sound negative, just eye opening. You realize a breeding male is not the bet house companion..they tend to mark. IF you want to breed, of course that is yoiur right..start by going to a dog show to learn about Yorkies and see what is a breed quality male There are shows in Vero Beach at the end of the month ..best wishes Last edited by YorkieRose; 04-24-2005 at 04:01 PM.

Thanks for the replies and... Well I thank you for the replies. I do see where it says dna # by the dads id. So once he starts to breed he will start marking? My husband searched for this Yorkie and bought him from a breeder. He paid $8,000 for him to get the quality. The breeder was rec. by a vet. ***I almost fell over when I found out he paid this much. So I thought about finding out the ins and outs of breeding and see if I would want to use him for a stud. I want to do this the right way, so your thoughts are helpful. I have one other question. I have a female and she is pretty. She is silver and under 4 lbs. But since Winston is a teddy bear face (and blue/gold) and she isnt. I was thinking of not breeding them together. Focusing my attention on using him as a stud. Another breeder asked if I would allow her male to impregnant my female. She would take care of the pregnancy and vet bills etc. Since I was also not sure if I wanted to do this, because she is tiny. I have delivered pups when I had lhasa's, but she is really tiny. Since this breeder wanted one of her puppies she offered to tend to her during her birthing and pay any vet bills. In exchange she would give me the sale of one of the pups. I know she sells them for about 1,500 to 2,500 because of the size. Should I allow this breeder to use her to welp a litter. I know her and I trust her. Thinking this would be a good way to have her first litter. Im kind of nervous because she is tiny.

breeding Your girl is under 4 pounds...and too small. I certainly hope the breeder your male came from was honest. $8000 will buy a finished champion or 4 show potential puppies. Do you mind telling me what city you are in...I live in Boynton Beach. I would love to see a copy of your males pedigree..who knows he could be from a line I would use myself...at $8000 he must be something quite special. You can PM me or email. I would steer clear of the breeder who is willing to risk the well being of your little girl for a litter...not someone want to know. Look for a bigger female for your male..and yes, he will become a leg cocking, peeing machine when bred.
