You could have a 3 pound male that came from 7 pound parents so it would not be wise to breed him with say a 4 1/2 pound female from like lineage because she could have a pup to large for her. So just going by weight is not enough there is more to it than that.

Excellent point. You have to go back to the parents and grandparents of dogs you are considering on breeding. Just because someone's dog weighs 3 lbs doesn't mean that the pups are going to be small. I have a book (will have to find it since we've been remodeling this week) and the book states...IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT BITCHES NEED TO BE AT LEAST 5 LBS TO BREED. (Not an exact word-for-word quote but says the words IMPORTANT 5 LBS)...like I said, will find the book in the next few days.

| Here's a quote from the Ann Seranne book, "The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show dog". I'm sure that some of you out there with 2nd, 3rd and 4th gens of your own can relate. "Sex-Linked Genes Theses are located only in the X and Y chromosomes and can alter expected ratios. Of interest to many breeders, who have trouble controlling the size of their puppies, is the theory that a bitch is genetically larger for her size than a dog. When two dogs of the same size are bred, the male offspring are often larger than their dam and the female offspring are likely to be smaller than their sire. On the other hand, because of quantitative genes it is possible to breed a large bitch to a small male and have a litter of average-size puppies. This applies only to the first generation. When these puppies are bred, there will be a substantial variation in the size of their offspring." |

I am NOT sure if this is planned, but my cousin found her dog in a similar situation. The dog accidently got out and mated with a much bigger dog. The vet had to repair her vagina that was torn up during the painful mating. The doctor then gave her an abortion because she was pregnant with one puppy, but it was going to be too large and it was putting the mother's life at risk. Afterwards he spade her and she is doing fine now. Good luck and please keep us posted on how she does. Last edited by cheryl000; 08-01-2006 at 09:57 AM.

| Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I just don't understand why people want to Breed these tiny females..... I really don't. Is it money ? If I had a super small female I would be far more worried about her health and keeping her safe... than forcing a pregnancy on her. I'm not trying to be mean...sorry if it sounds like it. I would really like to hear the reasons why people want puppies from a dog so small..... |
