We are back from the Vet with the pups... And it was rough on Mommy with her pups gone. She was crying, barking, and acting very anxious. She was apart from the pups for about 3 hours. The pups seem to be fine. They have stitches in their tail and I believe in their paw too. When we got home, Princess was licking and moving them around alot, but now she doesn't want to stay in there with them. She is still crying, barking, and acting very anxious. When she got in the box with them, they all started coming over to nurse, and she kept getting up and not sitting in one place. Now 3 hours later, she is still not relaxing with them at all. She goes in there, looks at them, and then leaves. When we try to close the door with her in there with them, she cries and barks. Is it OK now that they are 6 days old, that she not stay with them as much? Should I not worry about her wanting to leave them so much? Another poster stated that I could leave the box in an X-pen with the pups in their box, but does Mommy ever get let out of the pen? I think she will cry and bark alot, if she is not allowed to roam the house. Should I move the pups to a part of the house where there is more activity so that she is not always trying to leave them to roam? Any advice? Audrey

I would make sure they nurse since they have been away for so long. She really should be staying with them most of the time to keep them warm. A chilled puppy is a dangerous situation so put a heating pad on low underneath a towel, if she insists on not staying, but do make her feed them first and every three hours.

Just out of curiosity, where do you keep the Mommy and pups? They are in the bathroom, but it doesn't seem to be the best place for them. Is it ok for them to be out in a corner of the living room? Or is the bathroom better because it is more private? My parents live in an attatched house on my property, and the pups are in there only bathroom. There is not alot of activity in their house, no kids, just my parents watching TV, but should it be more private for them???

I keep the puppies in a spare bedroom in a large plastic container in a playpen. Mom just barks when she wants out. Most say they should be in a quiet secluded place until they are about 3 weeks, but I think this is more for the Mom than the pups so if Mom is happier being closer to you than I don't think it's a problem where you put them (if you don't have any other dogs). I would definitely keep them in a container of some type and not just on the floor though. Has Mom settled back down? If not, I'm sure she will. You might just want to stay and pet her while she's nursing until she's not as stressed.

Yes, we have been trying to calm her down and staying in there with her, and now is the first time that she is actually staying in there with them. We do have them in a plastic container, that mom can get in and out, and pups stay in. Its been working fine for now, and I guess once they start climbing out themselves, it will be time for something bigger.
