I read this whole thread and have seen breeders who DO retire their loved dogs ...

Pat is right - you would have to have limitless funds to keep every single dog that is involved in a breeding program. I found the breeders who I personally know feel a huge loss when they rehome...and txshopper is right too - that's why some can breed and some cannot - I'm just glad for those good breeders out there.

Couldn't have said this better!!! Breeding isnt easy by any means. Those of us that are responsible breeders feels more heartache in a lifetime that many of you will ever know...

What happens to the pups that cant be adopted out due to a birth defect or illness? Cuz some breeders have been doing it for a long time and Im sure there have been a few sick ones over the years---if the breeder cant keep a retired breed dog due to the cost and lack of time/space, etc.....what happens to those dogs?

Hopefully there arent many, but Im sure it happens occasionally.

You may need to ask the commerical breeder to get a accurate number of defective pups they must put down each year..as to someone like me who used to have about 20 to 30 pups per year..and that includes "puppy back" contracts...rarely do you get a pup you can not find the perfect home for..a cosmetic defect is just that, cosmetic. You reduce the price and people are thrilled to get it. A life threathening problem is very different and the breeder most often keeps the pup until the are well or die...that might occur once every 5 years or so.

Alright, I plan on breeding my yorkie with my yorkie poo which is what you would consider a mix breed. I have my reasons such as excellent health, great disposition, excellent pedigrees, great qualities to tribute to a mixed breed such as no shedding and low dander for those of us who have allergy problems. But I have also done my research on both of the dogs pedigrees, I know them myself and am also knowledgable of everything about breeding and what all goes into it. I love the breed and I am not in it for the money. The most important thing is the health and overall wellbeing of the puppies as well as the parents. I have a contract written up that anyone who is approved to buy a puppy from me, must have them spayed/neutered and is not allowed to sell, give away, abandon, or take to a shelter, they must give the pup back to me if for any reason that they did not want it or could not keep it, and it also states that yes I will take legal action if the contract is not followed by every word.
So what would be the problem of mixing these two breeds, especially when I can guarantee that they are not going to be one of those dogs in the shelter waiting for their fate to be decided...

Each breeder needs to do what they know to be ethical...to me ethic's in breeding means...strive to cause no unnecessary pain or suffering, provide a quality life for each animal I produce for the entire life of that animal if need be, and most important to me is to do no harm to the breed I love so much.

When I am dead I want to simply to be remembered as a friend of the Yorkshire Terrier..someone who left the breed better then they found it, not worse.

As the title is stated-this is for YT ethical breeders.

Im sorry if I offended the breeders here at YT. I know I offended Sylvan (among others) and Im sorry it was taken that way. I have read a lot of the posts at YT and there are many many loving/caring and ethical breeders here at YT--I havent seen one here that isnt. Its customers like me who very much appreciate the ethical and responsible breeder.

If I come across anyone who wants to purchase a yorkie pup--I'd definately refer them here first. There is a lot of very good information on this site coming from the breeders themselves.

Again, Im sorry if I offended anyone here and wish to thank you for a job well-done.
