| I guess I should have taken my questions to the breeder that we will be working with. But I figured since it was late at night and YT was online, I'll write and see what advice I would get last night. But I think from now on, any breeding questions I will ask them to the show breeder. I've never been to a dog show before but from seeing how she takes care of her babies (yorkies) I know that we will be in good hands. We did tell the breeder that we've never breed before and she said she will "handle things" and takes us through the process and the contracts. |

| To Feminvstr: I never said we can't afford it. Trust me, the money we spent on our Teddy was more than what most people would pay. He's obviously show quality if a show breeder approached us. Plus my husband and I both have very well paying jobs out here in San Diego, California. We wouldn't have gotten Teddy if we weren't able to take care of him. Just like I'm sure you all have considered before getting your babies. I never said we were strap for cash in getting the surgeries done. But if we can wait to get 2 surgeries done at the same time why not...it would save Teddy from going under for the surgery twice and an added plus would be the money. Again that's not an issue. |

Also keep in mind if you DO NOT neuter him before breeding age he will also wreak havoc in your house spraying on anything and everything! Even if breeding him once, this nasty habit will not usualy stop once neutered. He will more than likely remain a spraying machine!!! Once again I ask does he have a notiable pedigree? The reason is that if he is pure pet pedigree it's highly unlikely a show breeder will consider using him for stud!

| Like I said before, My husband and I have never breed or gotten into this "dog" thing before. Teddy is my FIRST dog. Our friend invited us over for a dinner party where she introduced us to her other friends which happens to breed dogs (yorkie) and shows them. We told them we just got a yorkie and started talking about our Teddy. We have met up a couple of times and when she saw Teddy at our house, she thought Teddy looked "perfect"--her words not mine (but I also agree since he's my baby). She ask about his pedigree and lines and I told her that didn't know what she meant since he's my first dog and don't know what all that stuff is about, so I just showed her all the paper work we got from the breeder we bought Teddy from. Afterwards, she asked us if we would like to breed Teddy with one of her dogs. Before she approached us, we never have thought about it. So that's how the whole breeding situation took place. The breeder here in california where we bought Teddy from said he was from a pure pedigree and gave us paper work of his ancestory lines which is why we paid so much for Teddy. At that time, we never thought anything of it like for breeding or showing. We just wanted Teddy because he was so sweet with us. Again, I just wanted Teddy because he was adorable when we saw him and I couldn't go without him. I never thought about putting Teddy in show. But if he's show quality that's an added plus. Personally I think all dogs are adorable whether they are show quality or not. |

please keep in mind the havoc a stud dog will do to ones home. Your prized pet becomes a peeing machine for the sake of one breeding! Then ask yourself is it worth it? Its far cheaper to buy another yorkie playmate than to replace a sofa, area rug and damaged flooring!!

agreed but you will be using them for life...on a pet that was bred once! I for one would rather not be a slave to belly bands to get a playmate...the trade off isnt worth it!

| Thank you for your concern Feminvstr. My husband and I were thinking about getting Teddy neutered after this first breeding to see if we can have one of the pups. We don't plan on breeding him anymore after that. We have talked to our vet and know the dangers of not getting Teddy neutered. Such as he may have prostate cancer or other heath complications. We want him to live a healthy life as long as possible so we will plan on neutering him after this breeding. |

Maiflower meant with no disrespect, but one would assume you are dealing with a purebred yorkie here, that alone doesnt depict quality...what remains a question of importance is his pedigree worthy to this show breeder. What I am attempting to explain is NO show breeder will intermix a pet pedigree if champion sires are available to her. If she truly believes your pup is of show quality she needs to further explain the costs involved in showing him. It's not an inexpensive venture nor should it be taken lightly. On average you one can expect to spend at the very least $1500 - $2500 showing and still there is no guarantee that he will finish! good example a show breeder here has shown the same male for almost 2 years and he has yet point in any competition!

I have always wondered you have 4 breeding males right? and they have the run of your house...Do you use bellybands to control the marking OR do you use something else? | |

| yep! belly bands a plenty here! BUT if my boys were merely pets they would have been neutered to avoid this...I hate the belly bands as do they but they serve a purpose to a BREEDER not a one time stud service!

| I will just share with you my experience with becoming a breeder. I had a mentor who shows her dogs, she started with yorkies, and has moved on to other dogs. She did breed yorkies and has 20+yrs of experience. In the begining she told me or actually warned me not to tell other yorkie breeders in the area that I was becoming a breeder... she said that many breeders will put me down in someway- ie: saying anything to get me to not become a breeder... because with yorkies, you can sell them for more... and breeders (seasoned ones) don't want you or anyone to start breeding them, you will take away some of their buyers... it was a long conversation and she told me many things. I then asked her- they why are you willing to help anyone become a breeder? she feels that it is her responsibility to help those that come to her for help, to share her knowledge, and give that welping female and then puppies the best chance possible.... she wants to help those who she believes will make great breeders someday.. she also said another main reason is because EVERY BREEDER has to start with their first litter- NO ONE is born knowing everything there is to know, and with yrs of experience breeding under their belt.... WE ALL start the same way... our first female, and litter. (by the way, I didn't have to pay her anything for her help, she even left dining with associates to help with the delivery at my home) She is very respected in the ring- her kennel name is known all over- she has had, bred, raised many champions. She approaced me, when she saw my jasmine about breeding her, if I had thought about it ect... she believed also that jasmines daughter would do great in the ring, and would make a good mama someday. She agreed with the reasons why I got her fixed, even before I knew her tear ducts didn't form right. The reason she approached me was because she was going to aid us in breeding our rotty, who was breed standard all the way and so beautiful... but other things happened, and we chose to spay her... Anyways, my whole point of this very long thread is this- good for you if you have a seasoned mentor- it isn't our right to judge your reasons for breeding, who knows, you may become the next best breeders of yorkies, you will come across many people who will try and talk you out of breeding, they may roll their eyes at you, many people forget that they also started out brand new to this. As far as the teeth go, I would talk to your vet- I would think that removing the retained teeth would be best for your dog now... but I am no vet. Good luck, I know I am sticking my neck out here, by what I have said, but I am just passing on what I was told, and found to be very true. There are supportive people out there, sounds like you have one in your mentor |
