With the small ones, I do not sell them until they are much closer to a year and only if I am convinced they do not have another health issue. Refusing to eat may be just the way he is however, it may be indicative of a health issue. It could be enymatic, liver/kidney issues, liver shunt. I am saying MAY it may not be but you won't know until over time see what happens. I would rather something go wrong while a pup like that is still with me, not sold to a pet home.
Once my Vet I determine we can procede with spay/neuter, after blood tests etc. I take it to my Vet and have that done and any retained baby teeth removed. If I still am not sure I can run a Bile Acid test. Xrays can be done or other things if heart issues may be suspected.
Only once all these things are covered and if the pup is still found to be healthy just small then I will sell to a pet home but not some inflated price, I sell for the same price as any pet puppy. Testing and spay/neuter is paid by me and one of my expenses.

Thank you . I am planning on having him thoroughly looked over and his bloodwork done. I do have to say that after doing all of that and regardless if he is healthy or has issues He will stay with me. I would have invested too much emotionally to let him go. I am also having his Dam spayed because after 2 litters with 2 different Sires and still getting very small pups I have decided that she is just not producing what I want. If I was unethical I could continue to breed her and sell her pups, but that is just not something I am comfortable doing. I do not now nor will I ever breed my dogs because of supply and demand. I breed for myself . I show my dogs and I breed to better the breed.

Wow really?? You think it is okay to breed non standard dogs, because she has a "market" for them?

Why do you think a standard exists? Just for fun? Something to be ignored when your dogs don't measure up to the standard? If you breed (which takes years) high quality healthy dogs to the standard, and to what you hope to improve with the breed. You will attract multiple "buyers" for your dogs. Before my first litter I had a waiting list of 7-9 qualified buyers. All came from one to one meetings, while I was showing or competing with my dogs.

Yup thats how I meet my breeder. Good breeders already have most of them sold before they even have them. Yes sometimes they maynot have them all sold but they breed for themselves and never seem to have a problem getting rid of them. PPL don't understand the why there is a "standard" To keep the dog in a healthy range from years,decades , centuries of figuring it out. Not because ppl want it???? But the AKC does modify the breed from time to time to accommodate.

I don't think the AKC has the power to modify standard, only the mother club has that power, and standard should never change for some arbitrary reason like popularity. I agree with you, standard should never be based upon popular fads, but should change if there is some health problem associated with the written standard.

By the way, shippernhorse, a yorkie that's three pounds is still "standard". Standard says "must not exceed 7 pounds." There is no lower limit.

Yeah I don't know how the standard change. Most likely it's the breed club, " mother club?? But I see them updating through out the years.

Yes, mother club is the same as the breed club. Some of the updating has to do with making standard more clear to people, and to tighten up any loose ends.

I read on the AKC site the standard was 3.5 to 7 pounds and now its gone just saying not to exceed 7...was that a recent YTCA "clarification"?

I've never seen the standard on AKC's site as anything other than "not to exceed 7 pounds." That is what it has been for as long as I can remember, I've never seen it state a minimum.

The AKC states the normal range in weight for a Yorkie is 4 to 7lbs. The YTCA just states the top weight as 7lbs.
Regardless judges do have a lot of power in allowing changes in the look, size and structure of any breed. That is how the Collie's head became so extremely angled to the point where it is having some terrible health issues. There are multiple cases of breeds being changed in their look over the years because a particular "look" became popular and was taken to the extreme. It could never have happened if judges had not favored the trend. These "trends" usually result in a huge determent to the breed.
It seems that with the extreme demand for tiny pocket type dogs that the YTCA would put a minimum in their standard in order to help protect the Yorkshire Terrier.

For as long as I have been on Yorkietalk the YTCA standard has says, Must not exceed 7 pounds. I'm not sure why the AKC wrote something different, but I do remember seeing that, I'm glad the AKC changed it, it created a lot of confusion here. The Maltese standard says, "Weight under 7 pounds, with from 4 to 6 pounds preferred. Overall quality is to be favored over size."

Here's the page where the AKC says, "Must not exceed 7 pounds" Yorkshire Terrier Page, but you are right, a couple of years ago, it did say that.
