I don't think the AKC has the power to modify standard, only the mother club has that power, and standard should never change for some arbitrary reason like popularity. I agree with you, standard should never be based upon popular fads, but should change if there is some health problem associated with the written standard.

By the way, shippernhorse, a yorkie that's three pounds is still "standard". Standard says "must not exceed 7 pounds." There is no lower limit.
