HAVING BABIES..MANY QUESTIONS.."HELP".. NEED HELP BY ANYONE WITH ANSWERS BY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS I POSTED THESE QUESTIONS ON ANOTHER THING QUESTION FROM SOMEONE BUT "HAVE NOT GOTTEN ANY RESPONSES BUT ONE" FROM THE ORIGINAL PERSON...SHE SUGGESTED I START BY OWN THREAD...HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE ..SO...HOPE I RECEIVE SOME RESPONSES...SHORT AND SWEET HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS: (1) DOES ANYONE KNOW APPROXIMATELY HOW MANY OR HOW LESS PUPPIES A FEMALE YORKIE CAN HAVE??? MY FIRST LITTER FROM LIL' BIT WAS (4)..(3) MALES AND (1) FEMALE BUT NOW ON TO QUESTION "2": (2) MY LIL' BIT IS DUE BETWEEN DEC 28TH AND JAN 1ST...THE "FIRST TIME" SHE WAS DUE I HAD A SONOGRAM DONE ...JUST REALLY BECAUSE IT WAS HER FIRST TIME PREGNANT AND SHE NORMALLY WEIGHS 7 POUNDS THE FATHER PISMO (WHICH IS OURS ALSO) WEIGHS BETWEEN 8 AND 10 POUNDS..GIVEN THE SEASON...AND I WANTED LIL BIT' TO BE SAFE AND HEALTHY...NOW ON TO THE SECOND QUESTION... (2)..LIL BIT' SEEMED SO MUCH LARGER THIS TIME FROM LAST TIME...AT THE SAME TIME AS LAST TIME...SO...I TOOK HER OUR VET WHICH IS A WONDERFUL VET AND VERY KNOWLEDABLE... FIRST WE HAD OUR SONOGRAM DONE AND IT SHOWED (2) PUPPIES...ONE WHICH WAS UNDER HER RIGHT RIB...BUT SINCE SHE WAS SO BIG I ALSO HAD A XRAY DONE ON HER RIGH AFTERWARDS...THE XRAY ONLY SHOWED (12) PUP...THE ONE UNDER HER RIB...THE VET AND I BOTH THOUGHT THIS WAS FUNNY SO WE WENT BACK TO THE SONOGRAM ROOM AND DID ANOTHER SONOGRAM...AGAIN IT SHOWED TWO!...BUT...SHE IS SO BIG!.. THE VET AND I BOTH THOUGHT THIS WAS SO FUNNY..JUST LITERALLY FUNNY..SONOGRAM SHOWS (2) AND XRAY SHOWS (1)???? **ANY SUGGESTIONS BY ANYONE?? HAS THIS HAPPEND TO ANYONE??? COULD MY LIL BIT' POSSIBLY BE HAVING MORE THAN ONE OR TWO AND THEM "NOT JUST" SHOWING UP?? OF COURSE THE REASON I AM CONCERNED WITH THIS IS THAT BITTY IS ONLY 7 POUNDS AND PRETTY SMALL BUT SHE HAD HER FIRST LITTER OF 4 IN 10 MINS. WITH NO PROBLEM AND HAD BEAUTIFUL PUPS.. **MY VET DID GIVE ME THE "GET GO" SHOT TO USE DURING HER DELIVERY IF SHE HAS PROBLEMS...BUT "I DO KNOW" THAT IF IT IS ONLY (2) PUPS THEY COULD BE QUITE LARGE AND MAYBE HARD TO DELIVER FOR HER...THEY WOULD HAVE ALOT OF ROOM IN THEIR TO GROW.... WELL...ENOUGH OF THE PROBLEM...I WILL BE LEAVING THE SITE FOR AWHILE BUT WILL BE BACK LATER THIS MORNING TO SEE IF ANYONE LEAVES ME ANY ANSWERS...**YOU COULD ALSO LEAVE MESSAGES ON THE PRIVATE PART OF MESSAGES ON YORKIETALK TOO IF YOU WOULD LIKE... THANKS AHEAD OF TIME FOR ANYONE THAT CAN HELP ME... SANDIE

Sandi, We always have x-rays done at about a week before delivery date. This should give you an accurate pup count and your vet should be able to measure pups and pelvic opening to determine if pups will fit for a natural delivery. I don't understand how a second pup showing on sonogram would not show up on x-ray. Skulls and spines should be visible at the very least. A small litter of one or two can have issues of growing too large for delivery and necessitate a c-section. It is of concern that you bred her to a male so much larger and I would suggest that you rethink that in future. Even using a smaller male has it's risks of throwing a large pup, but using such an over standard size male really presents opportunity for problems. Feel free to pm me with anything else I can help with. Best of luck with your pups.

oops, forgot...I would also caution against using the oxcytocin unless the vet has definitely determined the pups are not too large. There have been many cases where the pups lodge in the canal and both pups and mother are lost.

| Thank You Very Much For Reply And Look At Return Message... GOOD MORNING - THANK GOODNESS SOMEONE HAS REPLIED AND DOES SEEM TO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT!! I DO WANT YOU TO KNOW "BEFORE" WE EVEN BREED OUR LIL BIT' WITH OUR MALE PISMO I TOOK BOTH OF THEM TO OUR VET AND ASKED QUESTIONS AND HER ADVICE ON THE SITUATION..."OF COURSE OUR LIL BITS' HEALTH AND PISMOS TOO COMES OVER HAVING ANY LITTERS! ..SOOO... OUR VET SAID IT "WAS SAFE" TO BREED THEM TOGETHER AND "LIL BIT' DID DELIVER HER FIRST LITTER (3) MALES AND (1) FEMALE IN EXCELLENT HEALTH AND IN EXCELLENT TIME...10 MINS." DO YOU THINK OUR VET WAS WRONG IN ANYTHING?? I ALWAYS WONDERED ABOUT THAT.... I KNOW IT SOUNDS FUNNY ABOUT THE SONOGRAM AND XRAY...BUT...I WAS RIGHT THERE AND "DID" SEE FOR MY OWN EYES THE SONOGRAM AND THE XRAY...THAT IS WHY I PUT OUT THIS QUESTION..I FIND IT STRANGE DON'T YOU??? ...UNLESS THE SONOGRAM AND THE XRAY DID NOT SHOW ALL THE PUPS HOW ABOUT MY SECOND QUESTION..."DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY OR HOW LESS OF A LITTER A YORKIE CAN HAVE"??? MY PISMO WAS LENT OUT ONE TIME AND HER FEMALE HAD (7)..YES I SAY (7) YORKIE PUPS! THEY WERE ALL HEALTHY AND IN EXCELLENT SHAPE..."NOW"...HER YORKIE WAS KINDA SKINNY AND A LITTLE TALLER THAN MY LIL BIT' BUT SHE ALSO WEIGHED 7-7 1/2 POUNDS I HAVE TO LEAVE THE SIGHT FOR AWHILE BUT WILL CHECK FOR YOUR RESPONSE WHEN I GET BACK...YOU CAN ALSO EMAIL THE ANSWER TO THE PRIVATE MESSAGE PART OF YORKIETALK...THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.... | I always heard that the size of the pups depends on how many pups there are, so with bigger litters you get smallers pups. So, how does breeding to a bigger male have anything to do with the size of the pups? I'm just asking out of curiosity, not disagreeing, so please don't anyone take this offensively. I've been a little confused about this "big-male, small-male" issue, because of that. My vet (which I'm presently questioning the expertise and knowledge of) says the size of the male has nothing to do with the size of the pups. She said it all depends on the size of the litter, which she said is typically hereditary (if mama had a big litter, daughter has better chance of having a big litter). ????? |

question You never know how many pups you will get...I have had 1 to 7..with the average being 3 to 4. The angle of the xray is important in counting numbers. She whelped fine last time and should do well again..but you are prepared and have a good vet if there is a problem. You might do another xray on the 26th..Monday. Perhaps, the second pup is in a better position for viewing. Also, they can retain alot of water and seen bigger..and after a litter, the muscles can be more lax and the belly hangs and looks bigger..lots of reasons. I have seen huge bellys produce 3 pups and small bellys produce 5..good luck Last edited by YorkieRose; 12-17-2005 at 11:35 AM.

Good Afternoon - Your answer and questions is just what I thought...I still have questions too about all of this??? I quess I will just have to watch my Lil' Bit and see how she produces. Of course I just love my little girl and boy and "their" health and well being is "always" first! Not that I don't care about the pups I do...But...I love my little Yorkies and want the best for them.. Thanks Again...Watch the web site when my little ones are born I will post so everyone can see the results... Sandie

Hi - So glad you replied...I knew you would. I have gotten alot of excellent advice...some of it is just using your senses. One thing that you said though that I didn't think about and that was about them retaining water...you are correct. As far as the belly hanging...your right there too...I don't know if you have had children or not...But...If you have you know what are bellys can look like sometimes..So...Why not a Yorkie??...Right. I also kind of thought about the angle of the xray...That really does make sense...There just couldn't be any other answer to the craziness! Watch the Yorkie sight...When my little ones are born I am going to notify the site of the results...We will just have to see what happens. I am also going to watch my Lil' Bits track record on her deliveries and see what her track record is on having pups...sizes. amounts, etc. *This does not mean that I breed her "every" time she comes in heat...I feel for one that isn't ethical or really fair to the female ....especially health wise...I love my little girl. Thanks For Everything...I sure do feel better now... Sandie

Good Afternoon - One thing I didn't think about on the size of my male dog was what you said that the bones and head would be bigger...Thanks for that. I am being very very cautious with my Lil'Bit...I watch her every mood and moment...I don't want too many sirprises! And I am one of the lucky ones raising Yorkies...I have an excellent Vet and she is there for me 24-7...For example...Even if it was in the middle of the night I can call her at home and she will help me per phone call and if she thinks need be "she would even come to my house"! My vet doesn't think of her time really she thinks of the welfare of the animal...small and large and all kinds....I just love her and am lucky to have her. Thanks Again...I will be listing my pups when they are born so everyone can see the results..So watch...Due between Dec 27th and Jan 1st...So watch if you want to know. Thanks Again...My mind can now rest a little more easy... Sandie
