| ![]() I have had eclampsia 3 times and it scares the liven s**t out of ya.The first time Jewels had two puppies as soon as she was done whelping she kept panting then her face took on that grimace and she was uneasy couldnt stay with the pups, to the vets we went of course it was LAbor day and midnight. My vet came in and gave the IV of calcium, she was okay then the next am same thing back to the vet and another shot, she was better I supplemented the pups and all was fine. The next time she had one pup as soon as she was done delivering AGAIN she got eclampsia, back to the vet again and this time it was his daughters graduation, but he came in for me, a shot and all was good.I was afraid it would come back like last time so Jerry sent me home with a syringe full of calcium and sure enough she started panting again,(my heart was pounding thinking OMG not again) I gave her an injection of calcium under the skin, and then another one hour later and she was fine.Jerry said this time was not as bad as last time that is why he sent me home with a syringe to give injections myself.(under the skin it takes longer for it too absorb but worked for my female) My vet said some will do this all the time some a few weeks after pups are born ,some right away. He advised me too keep a syringe on hand and to give that dosage under the skin after whelping to maybe prevent it with other birthings. And never supplement calcium b4 birthing it can be the reason your girl may get eclampsia. In my vets opinion! It seemed to work well for her and I have not had it again and never do it is the most scariest thing. I have also had a rat terrier years ago that got eclampsia right after whelping. I have not experianced it weeks or days after birthing mine seem to get it right after birthing. Good luck with your little one and hope all goes well for her now. As my vets says all the crap that happens is called experiance and knowledge for future breeding and care of animals. So I guess I can chalk that up as too much knowledge for me in this department. |

| ![]() BUT..we do realize pills can not be used when eclampsia starts..they have to have it straight into the blood stream.. I do not like pills unless they are crushed...I found many in the stools and they were just like when they went in the dog. Crush them, use a powder or crush tums. I give mine cottage cheese and cubes of American cheese daily, before and after pups come. CAN you BREED a bitch after eclampsia..of course? You have a heads up and know to watch for it very carefully. I never let my two who had it nurse the entire litter ..I supplimented..got the pups at least half full or nursed half the litter and put them back..I never had a reacurrance after the first episode when latter litters..BUT I never allowed the dam to do it alone. Litter size is a big factor..if they have 4 and a problem..the next litter might be 2 and as a rule that will not cause a problem. ..but no guarantee. It is all up to the breeder and the advise of their vet. Some vets will say,..No more litters. A "breeder friendly" vet will know it is something that happens and a serious, dedicated breeder can deal with it. A pet lover who decides it would be nice to have a few pups for family and friends will not have to be told not to do it again. They will not want the stress ever again. It takes the fun out of breeding...and fun is not what a dedicated breeder is all about. |

| ![]() Kim, I am just now reading this and I am so glad that you acted so fast. That's something I don't think anyone would want to go through twice. It's just too scary to think that you might have lost her. Give her a hug from me...

| ![]() I lost my first Chi from eclampsia. I rushed her to the vet and he gave her a shot, I was very young at the time and new to it all. The vet not once told me not to let the puppies feed from her. and I lost her. It was so sad and Ill never for get it. |
