| Fighting like cats and dogs!!! I just got my 8wk old puppy and now Bailey (our 2yr old yorkie) is growling at her when she comes near him. We have only had her for 3days and he is still intolerant of her, is this normal? and how long will it last? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Hi got Cali at 9 weeks at the end of August and I ahve a 8 1/2 year old 12 lb pom who isn't the sweetest dog around and 3 months later she will tolerate the puppy alot of the times but when there is food or a bone involved she has chased her down and snapped at her. She has never bitten her I think she is just warning her. In the beginning the pom would not let the puppy near her, but after a couple of weeks she would let her sit near her. Now we have days where they will be laying next to each other and as long as the puppy doesn't jump on her she leaves her alone. So it definately has gotten better. I make sure to give them the same treats and lots of attention to the pom. But it's funny because the puppy is more jealous of my paying attention to the pom then the pom is of her. I would just give it time and keep a close eye on them when there together. Good luck! Keep us posted.

| It's a dominance thing... I think as soon as Bailey firmly feels he has established himself as the Alpha dog, he will calm down and accept your puppy a bit more. Give them time to acclimate to each other, and make sure you are showing Bailey lots of love. Try not to scold him too much for his rumbly indescretions, and I bet he will eventually accept the new baby as his best friend. Make sure, though, that you supervise them closely, and keep them confined away from each other when you can't supervise until they have found their comfort zone with each other. Good luck! This too shall pass!

| worried mama I have been showing Bailey a lot of attention and I put Lili in her xpen when I'm away...but I hope you all are right about it working itself out. I have to admit I'm a little worried about them not getting along. Last edited by tbradley; 12-07-2005 at 01:00 PM. |

| It's only been 3 days, right? Quote:
One tiny doggy step at a time... they will be fine, that's my bet! Hang in there!

| I'm sure that Bailey is just trying to show the new puppy that she is the Alpha. Once she sees that the new puppy understands this, I'm sure they will stop fighting. My first Yorkie Riley was VERY jealous when we brought TJ home. He didn't like TJ very much at all! He did many things to show that he was dominant and after TJ figured it out, they became best friends. They still fight when they play, but it usually doesn't turn into anything vicious (sp?) Don't worry! Your furkids will become best friends in no time. Just be sure to keep doing what you're doing (paying a lot of attention to Bailey too) Set aside some special quality time for you and Bailey so she knows that you still love her! |
