| 10 mo female-no heat yet? I am getting pretty worried-our female is 10 months old and hasn't had her first heat. About a month or so ago she seemed to be getting a bit more "lovey" towards our male (who is only 12 months old) so I was on the look out for any bleeding to begin so we could separate them. We would like to breed them once and keep the puppies. Is it possible that he got to her before she started bleeding? What is the usual age for heat cycles to begin? I am worried because I know she is too young to breed and don't want anything to happen to her. I have never had a female dog before so this is all completely new to me. Please help!

| hhhmmmmm I don't want to scare you, but my Angel never had a show of blood. She either did not flow much, or she cleaned herself really well. The only way I knew she was in heat was her privates would swell a LOT. I am hoping your girl is just late starting her cycle. Good luck!

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Gracie was 11 1/2 months her first heat. It comes at different times...just like human girls have them at different ages. Gracie kept herself VERY clean but she sure was swollen back there!

| Thanks everyone for the input-I feel a lot better now! She never was swollen, so I guess it just isn't her time yet.

| Since you have a male, you will know when she is in heat. Even if you don't see blood he will be able to smell that she is ready. Good Luck.

| Mia's first heat came 4 days after she turned 1. I was concerned, too, but no missing the swelling. She was a slight bit messy for a few days, but then kept herself really clean. |

| I am so glad to see this thread today. My little girl is 17 months and has not had a heat cycle yet. I asked the vet about this today and he said it is not unusual for a small breed female to not go into heat until over a year old but since mine is 17 months it is more likely that her first heat was "silent" with little or no symptoms. I find it hard to imagine that I missed it but I didn't really think of looking for it until she was at least 9 months so maybe it was before that. |

| Many a female will be over a year before they have the first heat. It is also not uncommon for a gal to go thru a silent heat- no real discharge just may get a tad bigger in her private parts. Each female is different and mother nature knows when the time is right. |
