Prayers for Cinnamon and her babies. Sometimes they can be 'early' and still well developed, so I hope for the best. How does the one look? Is the first pup with you or at the vet's? If the pup is with you, make sure it is kept very warm. Are you prepared for hand feeding?

Will check back for updates. If we can be of any help, feel free in asking.

Maybe we can get this thread moved to the breeders' forum so more than can help you will see your post.

the puppy looks very premature. it doesn't really even have any fur and its face does not look very developed... I mean, its not deformed or anything, it just looks underdeveloped. the puppy is at the vet. they are tube feeding him because he is too small to eat from a bottle... when I go to pick her up, they are going to show me how to tube feed. its worse because she is not producing any milk at all... they haven't called me with any updates so I am getting really worried... please, please just pray that she doesn't need a c-section and that everything goes okay...

If she is 8 wks she should be very close to her due date...I use to have a poodle girl that delivered at 57 or 58 days and the babies were always fine

good luck with your girl

I wouldn't think the vet would say to allow her to nurse even if she had milk due to the eclampsia and preemies aren't strong enough to nurse anyway. They will be very frail. They will need a very warm environment to have much of a chance as they won't be able to hold their body temp at all.

It's probably best to tube feed, though I don't have any experience with doing it. But, any other way and they have a greater chance of aspirating and their little bodies just couldn't take it.

I'm guessing you don't have an incubator, but you can rig up something that will help keep the pups warm. A small plastic bin with a lid on it and a heating pad inside should work to keep them from getting chilled. Remember that you cannot feed a chilled pup and, with them being preemies, their bodies couldn't take being chilled even once. Also, what's warm to us won't be warm enough for these pups.

Prayers for Cinnamon and her babies.

As Woogie Man stated, your girl already developed eclampsia prior to the whelp, I can't phanthom your vet allowing these pups to nurse. She will go into another eclampsia attack and this time you may not be able to bring her out of it.

Tube feeding may be your only option at this time. There is a possibility that your vet will Sub-Q these pups and teach you how. It's a method of keeping the pups hydrated. This can be done for 48 hours and it gives them an opportunity to grow and gather strength, allowing them to them be bottle/syringe fed.

Now to ease your mind, week old preemie pups can survive, it's going to take alot of work on your part, but it is possible. I speak from experience.

I'm not going to sugar coat anything for you, because that wouldn't be fair. Prepare yourself for the possibility of losing a pup, I lost 2 of a litter of 4.

My prayers are with you and here for you if you need advice, as others are. We'll help guide you through this.

Keep the pups warm, don't allow them to chill. The room where the pups are to be kept should be 85 degrees.

thank you all for the advice. I will do whatever it take to keep these puppies alive, even if it means not sleeping for a while. I might need some advice on keeping them warm. I know someone meantioned a box with a heating blanket and lid, but do I poke holes in the lid and keep the lid on? what kind of heating blanket do I get and how many layers of blankets do I put over the heating blanket? I am pretty scared to tube feed because I am so afraid of not doing it right, but I will do anything... I want to get everything ready to pick them up tomorrow so any advice on what I will need will be helpful. I do have a whelping box that I can put a blanket over and it stays pretty warm with the blanket.

You can put a heating pad under the box, that will pevent the pups from being overheated, which can also lead to dehydration. Or you can get a desk lamp with a flexible arm and add a 100 watt bulb and put it above the pups.

Oh! order some NutriDrops for the pups and Oral Cal Plus for your girl. You can order both through revivalanimal.com

Tube feeding is pretty tricky, but I'm sure you're vet will instruct you on the procedure.

Yes, you will be without sleep and pretty busy for the next 3 1/2 weeks, when the pups will be able to lap on their own.

By the way most vets will recommend an over the counter replacement milk. Esbilac can contribute to shunt, Just Born causes premature cataracs. The closest thing to mother's milk is goats milk. 1 can of goats milk diluted with equal amount of distilled water and a tiny bit of Karo.

As far as where to keep them. If you can a baby play pen off the ground or a puppy play pen. The whelping box will go inside the pen. You can then drape the pen with a blanket and no don't put a lid on the whelping box. Just make sure that make it soft a cuddly, but don't forget to secure blankets so the pups won't smother.

If you know anyone that has a new litter they might help you out, sometimes
the moms will take care of anothers babies. almost 2 years ago one of my girls never woke from having a c-section and left me with 3 tiny newborns, the vet knew someone with a litter that was 3 weeks old and she was willing to try and save them, her little mom acted as if these babies were hers and raised all 3 plus her 3

there was a time when i tried to feed a litter but i lost them 1 by1 and it was heartbreaking

Hopefully your vet will show you how to tube feed the babies.... I have lots of experience but it not something I would be comfortable with writing and have something go wrong. I will tell you my newer vet for the moment has not a clue and I taught her how to do it.
I use a kennel lan heating pad that only goes to a certain safe temp.
Plan on waking every 2 hours for the first week, then every 3 hours for the next week, and every 4 for the third week.
Goats milk can be purchased at walmart next to the evaporated milk in the human food section. Buy quite a few cans...I also add 1 cup of full fat unsweetened yogurt ( not low fat or fat free) to help with the digestive system and I also add mylicon infant drops to help with air in the tummies....
Finding a surrogate mom is always the best but usually not done as having 2 bitches of the same general size and pups of the same general age is difficult, then if the bitch accepts the pups (rubbing the bitches pups on the others, especially making them urinate on them is the best way)

These are preemie pups and their digestive tract is sensitive. So you want to keep it as close to mother's milk as possible, no extra additives. One can obtain Benebac, which is a probiotic and are available in small tubes. I use them whenever I make changes to their diet. Mylicon drops are great to have on hand if you have a pup that is suffering with gas. But, what truely helps is burping the pup after every feeding.
