Lilly is pregnant and I have several questions .... I'm not a breeder but wanted Lilly to have puppies before I had her spade. (wanted her to be a mom just once).
She's 3 years old and was bread with a YorkiePoo, also 3 years old. Both dogs healthy.

Before pregnacy Lilly was 12lbs and she is now 17lbs, is 5lbs too much weight to be gaining (her due date is 7/21/10 - 63 days from conception)?

Does the number of swollining teats indicate the number of puppies? She has 5 very swollen ones.

How do I know when she's going into labor?

I read it will be approximately 20-30 minutes between puppies and if it's more than an hour, to call the vet (indicating she may be in distress). Question ... how do I know she's in distress or just done having puppies?

Is it true they usually go into labor at night?

Once the puppies are born, how do I go about getting their AKC papers? Both Lilly and Lou (the male) are registered w/AKC.

I guess that's it for now ... but I'm sure I will have many more questions as the time goes nearer!

I'm really not trying to be a smart-butt....BUT, how the heck did a Yorkie/Poodle mix (the dad) get registered with the AKC?!?! Your puppies are going to be mutts and therefore will not be eligible to register with the AKC. My little Piper is a mutt and is not registered either...nothing wrong with that!

If she was breed with a yorkiepoo he is not akc reigstered. AKC does not accept mixed breed. They could be registered CKC.

Only Liverpool I know of, as I am from that area originally, is in England.

But the pups will not be able to be registered with the Kennel Club in England either.

I don't mean to jump on OP, but why do owners think that a dog needs to have pups before being spayed? Too many puppes out there from professional breeders.

If you know of any breeders in your area, check and see if they will help you through this. Good luck

Wow. I can't believe that you are just NOW asking these questions, when she's due very soon

Please search out a mentor that breeds toy breed dogs who will hopefully help you. In the meantime, read every single thing on this board, it's a wealth of information, not to mention people's real life experiences with whelping and raising tiny puppies. So many things can go wrong with a whelp with these dogs, and not having experience or knowledge on your side could very well have put your girl in jeopardy

The AKC does not register mixed breeds they are a purebred registry only but the Continental Kennel Club does but not a clue what they are registering??
Have you bred before? Small breeds? Do you have a mentor? Vet close by ready for a section? All health screens done on the mom? Whelping kit? Whelping box? First aid supplies?

No they don't. They do not register the dogs as a a recognized "breed." They issue a certificate stating that the dog is the offspring of two purebred dogs, but not that they are a registered, recognized breed themselves. Any offspring produced by those dogs cannot get the same certificate. (AKC issues the same type of certification for mixed breed dogs so they can compete in non-conformation events.)

You bred your dog. So yes, you ARE a BREEDER.

I am sorry, but the situation you have put her in to fulfill your own desires is less than ideal. Preparing yourself to breed your dog ETHICALLY and SAFELY is something you need to research and educate yourself on way in advance, not something you pick up on as you go. A bit late to be trying to figure this out now, a little over a week before she is due! Your best option at this point is to find and experienced breeder to mentor you through her whelp and to be there to assist you, or even your vet. You are going to be hard pressed to learn everything you need to know in such a short amount of time. Questions and answers via internet forum are not enough.

Oh dear based on your questions you are very unprepared. You have a lot of preperation to do all of which you should have done prior to the breeding. The only thing I'm gonna scold you about is that you've been a member since 2007 and I'm a bit concerned for your girl that you are just now asking these questions. There is some information in the library.

My advice is find a mentor and quick. Start obtaining all whelping equipment (expensive). Read everything you can about whelping. The internet is not a place you can obtain the knowledge.

Your pups will not be able to be registered with AKC. They are mixed breed dogs.

While I agree that research should have been done beforehand, the fact remains that pups are soon on the way. Can somebody with experience please take the time to answer all of her questions so she can do her best to get ready? She may not have the time to get a mentor now.

Unlikely if she really tries. She surely has time to find a vet and explain the situation to her. It may cost her money, but you have to do what you have to do.

No, swollen teats have nothing to do with the number of pups being carried.

Read the link provided above and talk to some breeders and your vet to learn the signs of impending labor. They should be easy to detect if you are vigilantly watching her close to her due date. Panting, nervousness, loss of appetite, reclusiveness, pacing, licking, temp drop are common indicators.

You cannot get AKC papers. The dogs are not going to be purebred dogs. There is no way the male is AKC registered. If you are under that misconception, that is very unfortunate, but in the end, the dogs are going to be mixes...not registerable dogs.

They go into labor whenever they feel like it, not only at night. It is often when their environment is calm, if they can help it. (Hope that makes sense.)

Signs of distress--in other words, the things that typically lead to serious complications for the female and pups. There are literally hundreds. How can you possibly educate someone on that in a week over the internet. You can't.

We can do a question and answer session all day long...but it's never going to be enough to ADEQUATELY prepare someone for what lies ahead. The way to BEST get her ready is hope she understands this and gets a mentor as advised. "Not having time to find one" may not cut it.
