i never said asked any questions about female/male pricing. i have no idea where you are getting that.

the first mention of female/male pricing stemmed from the conversation about dogs being priced differently, and this was the comment:

English is not a second language to me and I thought it was pretty clear what was being implied. The OP had mentioned about the difference in pricing males and females and was answered by mostly exhibitors/breeders. On the general issue of pricing pups, I feel it's nobody's business what someone charges or why. I think there are other things about a breeder that are more indicative of their ethics and qualities as a breeder than price. I may not agree with what someone else is doing, but, hey, it's their business. If I were looking for a pup and didn't like the price and it was a sticking point for me, I'd just move on and look elsewhere. It is a fair question, though, to ask why puppy 'a' costs more than puppy 'b' in some respects. It may well be that one pup is a sterling example of the breed while another may not be so much so and these differences may not be apparent to the prospective buyer. There are other valid reasons for pricing and reasonable questions should be welcome, but I don't think anyone has the right to just nose around people's business and make judgment calls.

There are some things that I feel are just over the top and I'm sure everyone can think of a few examples. They probably all have been discussed here time and time again. That's why it's important for a prospective owner to educate themselves first on the breed and become familiar with what's out there. Then they can make an informed decision on which breeder they feel most comfortable with and hopefully get the puppy that's right for them.

One thing that I think is universal is that you should be looking for a breeder that is not just 'selling' pups but is instead 'placing' them. There is a perfect home for every pup, but not every home is perfect for every pup. You should be able to pick up on this early on in a conversation and if you sense that the person is 'selling' rather than 'placing', you should look elsewhere.

The longer the coat, the more knots you will have w/ clothes. Apply conditioner on coat prior to wearing. A product like satin creme is helpful.

Well, I was talking to another yorkie owner at the dog park the other day and he told me what happened to his female yorkie. She was small and wasn't spayed, but they weren't planning to breed her -just hasn't gotten around to it. He also had a male poodle at the time and the female went into heat and he didn't know about it. They dogs mated without him knowing. He found his female yorkie odd so he took her to the vet and THE VET DIDN'T EVEN CATCH THAT THE DOG WAS PREGNANT! Thinking everything's fine, a month or so later, he found TWO pups under the blanket with his yorkie!!! LUCKILY his female yorkie delivered the pups successfully herself! Otherwise, she could have done since who knows how big the poodle was. Thus, the spay and neuter contract is to prevent incidents like this one from occurring.

Also, when I was thinking of studding out my Carmel, the lady told me that her yorkie are not registered because she bought it with limited registration (so she IS NOT suppose to breed her), but she still is doing it! Unfortunately, her breeder trusted her and did not do a spay/neuter contract. I am not a breeder, but if I were to ever have puppies, I would make sure that they are spayed/neutered. I wouldn't be breeding just to sell and make money. I feel sad for this poor puppy...

I have had people stop me when I'm walking Magic our BRT and ask me if he has any puppies, and if so could they have one just like him. Their next question was what kind of dog is that? LOL they want what they don't know. Then I said if you want one just "like" him, that means you'd like to train 2-3 times a week, brush daily, learn show dog grooming, exercise daily, swim and treadmill work weekly, etc etc.

Oh yes BRT is a Black Russian Terrier, which are large dogs, that absolutely must be trained.

That's the oddest request I've had so far.

But, that's why I have a $5,000.00 breech of contract clause in my contract. And keep in close contact with all my families.

i never said anything about anyone else's choice, and i've said repeatedly that i do want a yorkie, but I am waiting to see if my "right fit" could be one of those thousands of yorkies already needing homes. that doesn't mean i'd take the first one needing to be rescued. it also doesn't mean i won't end up buying one from a breeder. i don't see how my personal search is insulting to anyone else.

furthermore, the OT wasn't about rescues vs. breeders, but since a breeder mentioned the fact that there are so many yorkies needing homes, it brings up those questions. i'm not anti-breeding, but it sounds a little contradictory to ME for one to say he or she breeds to cut down on the number of homeless animals. i also think the "i only contribute a few so it doesn't really matter" mentality is dangerous. it's the same way intentional and unintentional backyard breeders think as well - and look where that's gotten us.

I would not go to a rescue for a dog because the hassle they put you though and the prices they charge. i might as well by a puppy at least you can train it the way you want it trained. I know a number of elderly that would like a yorkie rescue but they can not afford one. Why not give them to the eldery that are on fixed incomes that would like to have one?

I'm a little confused by what you mean the prices they charge? Most rescues charge $300.00 or less, the problem with giving away the dogs for free, is that people might not be able to afford vet care, and people tend to value that which they pay for. As far as resues being "too strict", I wish more breeders would be strict. Some people just shouldn't have a pet, stick around Yorkietalk, you'll see what I mean!

Couldn't have said it better myself! I've been away for the last couple of days and OMG I've missed so much! LOL...been reading some discussions and wheww probably glad I was not on YT for the last 3 days lol

There is also the possibility of obtaining a retired female, one that is Championed and retired from breeding, but still young. These females are placed for the the price of a spay and teeth cleaning. These girls are still young, about 5 years old It's wonderful for elderly people on a fixed income. The eldery women have a lot of good years with a dog and none of the potty training and antics of a puppy.
