| First Litter Hey peeps, haven't been on here in quite a while. Anyway, my 1.5 yr old female yorkie is in her second heat, 7th day. We brought her to a breeder 2 days ago who also does stud services. Apparently Miley (my yorkie) was after the stud dog, Max(under 4 pounds), as much as he was after her! Within an hour, they were in a tie. The breeder, who has been one for 20 years, says that more matings=more puppies. Because of that she said she's almost afraid to do a second mating. However, I'm afraid that she won't get pregnant. Just a note, Max has tried to impregnate 95 bitches, and succeeded with every one. Miley is due around May 2nd (59 days) and May 6th (63 days). This is my first time breeding, and I have done much research, and continue to. Any help, advice, and personal experiences welcome!!!! Last edited by wolflover; 02-26-2010 at 04:59 PM. |

| How many pups there will be depends on how many eggs the female passed during ovulation that were greeted by viable sperm. The sperm may remain viable for a couple of days following a tie. I've had a girl have 5 pups with only 1 tie. I highly doubt any more ties would have resulted in more pups, though I usually allow 2 ties, with 1 day in between. Best of luck with your prospective litter.

| Also, erm... this sounds kinda stupid but is there any way to do Artificial Insemenation without a male dog? Like, at all ever? I'm guessing no, but just wondering. |

| Miley's just 4 pounds, and the breeder said she probably wouldnt let us mate her with Max if she didn't have such thick hips (apparently she has thick hips). |

At 4 pounds, Miley is considered too small for breeding. Most breeders use 5 pounds as a minimum safe breeding weight, but even then, it depends on structure. What you're looking for is enough clearance in the pelvic area for a pup's head to pass through. There should be some wiggle room for your thumb when placed between the pelvic bones. Actually, you have to consider that many pups are born breach so then you have the rear end coming first. Aside from the stresses on a small girl carrying a litter, there is a higher risk of a c-section being necessary. Or, she could quit pushing before she's done and it's off to the vet's you go, assuming you recognize her distress. You'll also need to be prepared to hand feed babies if necessary, and the chances of that is higher if she has very small babies. Even when healthy, those born in the 2 ounce range often are too small to latch on and nurse. There's much more to be considered, but the point I'm trying to make is that breeding Yorkies can be challenging, even in a textbook case. Miley's pregnancy wouldn't be considered textbook, but instead risky, based on her size. That's a lot to contend with for a first time breeder and a lot of risk to expose your Miley to. Having her spayed now would be the safest thing for Miley. I have a little girl that is about Miley's size. I had her spayed once it was obvious she would never make breeding size and she's now my House Princess. I could not, in good conscience, do anything else.

| The stud owner bred her on her 5th day of heat...could you be off on the day number??? Far too early..and few bitches stand and accept a male on the 5th day...possible, but not often...and one breeding at day 5 is not the best for a litter. JMO..any breeder who thinks the more you breed a bitch, the more pups you get is completely uneducated and has no business breeding...I am sorry to be so blunt, but the stupidity of some breeders is scary...and dangerous. You do not have to OWN a male to do AI..you can buy semen..same as stud service..it can be shipped all over the world.. |

Your decision is one that no experienced breeder here would make and they are all much more qualified than any first time breeder. Your decision speaks volumes. Breedings such as this have as much chance of being disastrous as they do of going relatively well. If you continue with this, I hope you get lucky for Miley's sake. BTW, it's not you going through this. It's Miley and the risks are hers.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I recommend you have an xray after day 50 to see how many. That way they can see if they are to big to pass. How old is the stud? That is alot of litters. Was he tested for brucellosis before your girl was sent?

| Most studs are started around a year...so in 2 1/2 yrs this male has sired 95 litters..I would be more concerned about using an over used stud. Bitches do not come in season one or two a month..so he has to have been used 2 or 3 times in a week for some time...no wonder the stud owner recommended one breeding..probably had another bitch waiting to be bred...Best wishes |
