I have my babies docked and duclawed on day 4. some people prefer day 3, I like to wait one more day for the blood to clot better. I dont take my pups out for that, I have my mentor and my son, come to my house and do it here, I am going to dock my next litter myself.. now that I saw it done I know I can do it... I like the clamp and twist method, rather than the cut and stich method the vet's use. but that is just my preference. to register your litter you need the mom's and dad's AKC registration number and you can do it online thru the AKC site. hugs, Carmen in nj

| It takes approximately 63 days from the time of conception, not from the time of the breeding. Most yorkies have their pups anywhere from day 59 to day 65 from the first tie but some can have them sooner and some can go longer, depending on when they conceived. Tails are usually docked on day 4 or 5, depending on the size of the pups. Before I started docking the tails myself, I would always take the momma with me when I took the pups to the vet for tail docking. As for registering the pups, is your momma and sire registered? If they are both registered with AKC I know you can register them online, if they are with a different registry then you need to contact that registry, it should be on their papers. When is you female due? I hope you are doing lots of research on whelping and caring for the momma and babies. There are many things that can go wrong so for the safely and welfare of the momma you really need to be prepared. |

| Was this a mistake? How old is your little girl? What size is she? What size is the stud? Is this your very first litter?

| Are you prepared? Do you have all the supplies. do you have your vets number in case you need to contact him? Do you know what to expect? Do you know the danger signs? When you need to call the vet? If you have any more questions please ask now, don't wait until it is too late? Do you know what to do if a puppy is not breathing? Do you know how to clamp and cut the cord so it doesn't bleed out? Ask your vet when he prefers to dock the tails. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS YOURSELF. |

In any event, what is done is done. Do you have a mentor that is going to work with you during the whelp. If not, finding one would be my first suggestion. There is no substitution for having someone with you experienced in the area. You estimate the due date counting 63 days from the first tie with the male. Your vet will be able to take x-rays at about 50 days and give you a good indication regarding if the pups seem small enough for her to free whelp. Search the site and make sure you find out what supplies you will need and get them in advance. Learn what to expect with a routine whelp...how long she should be in hard labor, danger signs to watch for, etc. Talk with your vet about supplementing her calcium afterwards. Best of luck to you!
