Does AKC status mean a lot to you when purchasing a pup?

It doesn't matter to me either. What is more important to me is seeing both the parents, knowing the breeder and how they care for the puppies, and seeing the puppies living conditions. My pets are just that...pets. They aren't for showing or for breeding, so as long as they don't come from a puppymill, I am happy.

The breeder would be in big trouble if the papers were not accurate. So most AKC breeders are very careful about that.

My point was that no, AKC does not REALLY offer any recourse. It would be up to the breeder to compensate or whatever.

Well the recourse would be, if you found the papers were false, the AKC would ban the breeder if they did not make it right.

Reading the info on the suspension list on YT here, it seems to me that someone in violation is suspended and fined too.

nope, doesnt matter to me. I have 3 dogs that are registerable (not sure if that is a word) and I havent sent the paper work in. My dogs are my pets only. If I was too breed or show than yes the paperwork/pedigree of the dog would matter.

Well said. Definately seeing the parents or at least mum is the most important thing. When we went to see Alfie, mum and dad were both there. Mum was so well socialised and came up to me for a cuddle. Dad just liked to bark. Mum is KC registered but dad isn't so Alfie can't be but we were more than happy with the parents and puppies and we don't intend to show and Alfie will be neutered. I know it is important to some people. My parents were ones for having to have pedigree puppies and both dogs we had as children weren't trained or socialised, would pull like a train when out walking. I think unless you want to breed or you want to show then it doesn't really matter. As long as you have seen the mother with the puppies. But as everything its an individual thing.

Both of my furbutts came with AKC papers, but since I don't intend to breed, do I even need to finish the registration for them?

You totally misunderstood me and jumped to a wrong conclusion. I simply meant I obviously did not do a very good job trying to explain myself well and I was going by what I read on the AKC site. I'm not trying to prove anything...No need to be nasty to me.

Bingo! A dog being registered with AKC does not guarantee that it's a quality dog or that the breeder is reputable. And as JeanieK mentioned, AKC registration does not "guarantee" anything 100%...paperwork can still be falsified. Dont' think that it gives you any kind of gives you a free pass in regards to doing your research first. To me, the importance of AKC registration would depend on if I wanted the dog for stock, show, pet, etc. Don't get me wrong, I definately think that AKC is the best as far as registries go...but I would not go so far as to say 'All AKC dogs are more valuable' than non-AKC dogs.
