| Most of my girls weigh between 5 and 7 pound before breeding.......My biggest girl, now spayed has always whelped 5 to 6 oz pups. Her last two litters gave her the most trouble. The litter prior to her last, one pup, the smallest, was born hind legs first....his chin got caught in her pelvic bone...had to be emergency delivered (no C-Section). Vet inserted a tube full of KY Jelly into her....it really lubericated her and out popped the pup....with a huge popping sound. Her last litter was when her horn was ripped during the whelping process.
That being said, problems can exist in big girls too. But, why buy trouble. It's very dependent on her pelvic area. But, other problems can present themself, posterior presentation, pups going up the horn, instead of down, pups blocking the canal.......just so many, many things to look for. I worry just as much about going past their due dates as delivering them prematurely. |
