I got it at GNC, my holistic vet told me to have it handy when I told him about Taffy's story, her story is all in my blog besides the traditional whelping kit mine also had the holistic recomendations of my vet.. the tea is called Organic Raspberry Leaf and I made a cup following the instructions and cooled it off outside she had the babies last January, and mixed it with a bit of whelping puding that she loves and gave it to her, and like a miracle about 20 minutes later she had contractions agan and the placenta came out. she had no need to go to the regular vet, my son came home that afternoon and checked her and gave her a clean whelping bill... it did cost me dinner.. but after a worrisome few weeks life was good, I kept one of the babies the runt and he is GORGEOUS.. now I am breeding my silkie terrier in the next few days but I feel a LOT more ready and prepared, she passed all the pre mating test and harry boy too.. so now is a matter of waiting for the RIGHT day..LOL

oh girl.. you are on my play yard.. I convinced my son to take a holistic vet medicine course, with my holistic Vet..Dr. Magda Aquino, he just started a few weeks ago and he keeps telling me is harder than his vet courses..LOL so soon hopefully he will be able to help us all with his new aquired education that MOM is paying for..LOL, since the GI bill does not pay for that course..LOL

Thanks very much for all the great info! It's been many years since I have experienced a litter being born.

I think I may be not understanding something tho....Each pup is attached to it's own placenta via the cord. If the placenta doesn't come out before the next one is born.....is that not dangerous? When that happens does it mean that the placenta broke off and is still in mom? If the placenta is still in mom and the pup is out.....is THAT when you cut it? Or cut only after placenta and pup are out together?

Generally it is not a problem but sometimes I have had a puppy come out with it's placenta and it also had the previous pups placenta wrapped around it. It is pretty scary looking.

This site explains a little about retained placentas:

Question:

My girl tied last weekend twice. I believe that she tied in the first days of opportunity. Today...nearly a week later she was standing still for my neighbors dog....he sniffed her alot but never tried to mount her. Do dogs that tie a couple times still flag and stand still a week later??? I was under the impression that the "flagging" days and "good tie days" were only about three or so days long.

Females are in heat 3 weeks. Many females will continue to flag and breed (if allowed) all the way to the end of there heat cycle. I have heard a number of times of females accepting a male even beyond the 3 weeks. Make sure you keep all males away from her for at least 3 weeks from the beginning of her heat cycle.

Wow! Good to know! I figured since she tied already she would have no more interest. Really good to know

Boys...stay away, lol....Yeah, I don't ever leave her alone....only in the house.

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, they do ( but all females are different). Tayah was the same way this time. She is still flagging and she is on day 17 of her cycle (still early). I am still keeping Tayah and Harley seperate until they both calm down. Harley seems to be ok but Tayah still puts her bum in his face and gets him worked up enough to get on and try. We are looking at maybe another week before letting them together.

So the best way is to introduce them back together slowly. Maybe through a gate at first and then in a room where they can't run too far away. This way you can get to them if needed. You should know right away if they will be ok together. This is what I do at home!

I got my Raspberry Tea from Revival Animal Health. They have a great syrup there that is good for pregnant females. I gave it during Ellie's pregnancy and she did great. She delivered 5 puppies within 2 hours.

I know I am asking many questions....most of which I researched answers and advice for a year ago already. But, to LIVE it and have the actual tieing and pregnancy and birthing right in front of you is NOTHING like ready it, lol. Pictures sure are helping me get a good visual

I'm not completly new cause many years ago my dear dog who is now 12 years old....(love her ) she very unexpectedly became prego. I literaly had a week to get ready and learn. All went well....puppies placed...momma did great....but I was a wreck! I had never been through that before. I got her fixed right after, lol. But, she is not a 5 pound dog....it's a whole new ball game for me.

I have read and read and read. I ask...though I am often scared to here. Someone posted a link for me to a debbie jensen site and on there is this:

"I have always been confused by any dog breeder that calls a new breeder a backyard breeder.
What they never were young and inexperienced ?
How did they forget ?
Nobody has a right to make you feel small or less because you have chosen to be a dog breeder, especially if they breed themselves. "

That was good to read. So true. Everyone starts somewhere. I just happened to be starting. This may even end up being her only litter....if I go through this and don't feel confident....I won't be doing it again. I love my girl and want her with me always

Anyway, thanks so much for that. I really appreciated reading it

EDIT: I'm a girl. My name often gets confused with "mark" the way it looks, ha.
Your Welcome i don't like the term back yard breeders ether. Every good breeders started as a so called back yard breeder and was inexperienced at one point. not all back yard breeders are bad i think they are better then some big breeders because they are able to give more attention to one mother and a few puppies rather than a bunch of litters and mothers. I think some people on here hear so many horror stories about bad breeders , puppy mills animal abuse they forget not everyone is bad. But people want to ask thoughs questions just to make sure you have the right intentions and its very understandable. i want to know why someone is breeding too. but just don't get too worried and fill your head with to much of what bad can happen because when time comes you might freeze up. im sure you will do good and the mom and puppies will do great too.

No, every breeder started out inexperienced. What you do BEFORE you start breeding in regards to preparing and educating yourself on the breeding process is what separates shady, backyard breeders from those who are simply new breeders with little or no experience.

The name is Red Raspberry Leaves Syrup. Here's a link to it from Revial: Thomas Laboratories - Red Raspberry Leaves & Syrup #25464-275

Good luck with your possible pregnancy. I am expecting a litter in November if everything went right with the mating this past week.
