Complications:

If the dam has been pushing hard and steady for half an hour and there is no pup in sight, put on a surgical sterile glove and insert your finger in the vaginal canal to feel if there is a pup in the canal. This is called "feathering" and sometimes will make the bitch get down to business and push some more. If the pup is right there, another few pushes should get it out. If not, alert your vet immediately.

Other danger signs before, during and after whelping - Call your Vet

Constant hard labor for more than an hour with no results.
Green or odorous discharge from the vulva
An interval of two hours between pups with occasional hard labor
Any part of a pup stuck or protruding from the vaginal canal.
One hour of hard labor and no puppies
Three hours of no labor between pups and you think there is another pup.

The really hard contractions usually last about an hour you will know when you see them. How is she doing now? The only time I ever had a c-section done, the female had pushed hard for an hour and then she started screaming in pain and that is when we rushed her to the vet. I knew it was not normal. She had one big puppy in her and the poor momma could not dilate enough to pass the pup. The vet did a c-section and the pup was fine.

She is fine. A little shaky. She pushes not hard four or so times....then rests then maybe half an hour later she does it again. These are not strong pushes at this point.

Good luck & prayers for a safe whelp for you and your little girl! Sounds like it's time for you to put on a pot of coffee! I'll be looking forward to your updates!

What I am most regreting at this point is not giving her a total puppy cut! It's short....but not short enough for the mess I am envisioning, lol.

When she gets to the strong contractions they will be minutes apart. It sounds like you have a ways to go. Do you have Nutri-cal on hand? I like to give my girls some Nutri-cal throughout the labor to help keep their energy up.

Thanks. I will post as often as I can.....this is my first time so when it really starts....I will not be leavin' her for nothing even tho this comp is two steps from her box, lol.

Yes, i have nutrical. How often through out the night you figure I can give her some? I don't wanna over do it!

I usually give mine a little at the beginning of the labor and after that if they go more than 1 hour between pups I give them a little more. Probably, about 1 inch worth of Nutri-cal each time I give her some. What time is it at your home now? Hopefully Mary or someone will be able to stay up and answer questions. I do wish you luck tonight.

It's 9:20.

And thanks also winston and tammy. I am real nervous...but I think we will do ok :) If not, I have a couple people I can call in the middle of the night as well. I hope it doesn't come to that tho.

Ok, we have progressed some. She now pushes for 5-10 min and then rests. She fidgets around alot during this. I just spoke again to my vet assistant and she said this was just perfect....and that it could go on for a looooong time till that first one is out. I will update as much as I can. I PRAY these pups make it and my girl comes out safe and healthy. Oh my.
