| Puppies alone... For those of you that work or need to be gone for long periods during the day: How long is it okay to leave 6-7 week old babies alone with or without mom? Without mom would be b/c Cassie has not spent time alone with them, and I don't how she would react with them in a strange place - but I'm not sure how to handle that yet. At the moment, she couldn't care less about being with them, but that might change when they are less demanding. This could only work if they were fully weaned and eating well on their own. We are thinking of going out of town for a few days and bringing them with us, but I don't feel comfortable leaving them very long when we leave the hotel room. We would be going to a water park, so would be gone for a long time during the day. I would put a sign on the door for no housekeeping. There isn't anyone around me that I would trust with them, so we might not go out of town, but I would love to make it work if possible. Thanks! |

| Never mind. The more I think about it, the more I worry that someone will take the puppies from the room, the mom will freak when left by herself with the puppies, the mom will freak if left without the puppies in another room, and countless other scenarios. I think we have decided that dh will take the older kids somewhere (not the same place, b/c the kids said it wouldn't be the same without me), and I will stay with the youngest, the pups, and the rest of the zoo. I know my never-ending interesting scenarios are just entertaining you guys to no end. Last edited by tammys; 07-15-2009 at 07:36 PM. |

| Is there another breeder in the area that you could exchange "sitting services" with? That is probably the best idea to give you a little family time.

But, then I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to my pups.....so, take my fears with a grain of salt. My life is virtually on hold until the day they go home.

LOL, I feel the same way, so a grain of salt works for me. My life has absolutely been on hold, but I wouldn't change it for anything...well, maybe more sleep, but that's all. Thank you!

That's a good idea, and my daughter actually looked up some local breeders when she read your reply. But, I would still worry that they wouldn't be cared for the way I would want, or that they might catch something. If I wouldn't leave my kids with them, I wouldn't leave the pups with them either. Thanks for the idea, though.

| Is there a older family member that you can take with you that does not like the water but would be willing to just chill out in the room with the dogs while you are at the water park? |

1. wouldn't work b/c they have 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks (one is a puppy) 2. isn't a dog person 3. At first, I counted this one out, b/c they have another dog...but... I totally trust her, and she has a spare bedroom, where she could keep the puppies. She offered, and I told her to make sure it's okay with the rest of her family - so it looks like it might work out! Thank you for your thoughts, everyone!

| Update - friend's house Here's the deal: - it's not as long as it looks. LOL I put lots of spacing in for easy reading. My friend says she would love to watch the puppies. Now, I have some questions (big surprise, right?) Question #1 If you were in my situation, what would you tell you friend regarding the puppies' safety? Please feel free to add to my list. By the time I finish she might tell me to take my pups and hit the road! Puppy list 1.Keep them in the room (not on the floor). I know they will want to play with them; I just don't want them all over her house or outside. 2. Wash hands before playing with them - don't know if most people do that, but we do. 3. Don't let her dog near them Question #2 She will get them for 5 days/4 nights starting the day they turn 6 weeks. At that age do they usually still nurse in the middle of the night? Remember, that mama will not go in the pen with them, so we have to put her in there to nurse. I worry that they might be hungry in the middle of the night, b/c I don't expect her to get up twice like we do to put mama in with them. I am not comfortable locking up her with them, since she constantly tries to get away from them. Question #3 At this age (5-7 weeks) how many times do they nurse/day? If I don't tell her to put Cassie in there a certain number of times, Cassie will completely dry up. We are offering them puppy food throughout the day. They won't eat it on their own yet, but they will lick a bit off our fingers. By next week, hopefully, they will be gobbling it down. I was going to tell her to leave food in their pen throughout the night. Last edited by tammys; 07-17-2009 at 07:22 AM. |

No over handling. Milk only lets down every 2 hours. At this point your mom's milk is changing consistency and baby teeth are coming in. She should be away from the pups more and more during the day, more puppy food for pups. And pretty much left with them at night so, puppies can drain her and prevent her bosums from bursting. Watch for poop consistency changes in pups.

I would love to leave her with them at night (believe me getting up in the middle of the night several times for the past 5 weeks has not been fun), but she doesn't want to be with them. She jumps out of the pen as soon as we walk away. I thought about getting something to put over the pen to keep her in, and am pondering on getting it today, and seeing how she does. I don't want her to freak out, if she can't get away from them. That's why we have to put her in with them every 4 hours or so.

| Great news!!! My neighbor (number 1 on my puppy watch list) will be watching ALL our animals at our house! She is super busy, but offered to come every few hours to take care of everyone! I'm going to give her a baby monitor, so she can listen for the babies, but as long as we can get them to eat on their own, it should work fine. |
