I lived in Colleyville, 26 miles Northeast of Ft Worth and 26 miles Northwest of Dallas. Still had some agricultural land there, but it was getting scarce. You could still see cows and goats grazing.

| Just once a day at first? I have one other question.... Should I limit the amount they eat at first? I am afraid that if I just start putting food down and leave it they will eat a lot and get constipated or something... I want to avoid problems if possible.

| No, do not limit. Remove the dam from the pups for a bout an hour or so and offer them a weaning formula two or three times a day helps the dam out and gets them started lapping. For some very fat pups where there is an abundance of milk from the dam, ou may be wasting your time, but it's good to try anyway. Let the dam in to cleam up the leftovers and clean up the pups. In some cases, the mother will refuse to let them nurse at about four weeks (usually this is when the pups begin to cut teeth). Sometimes her milk will begin to dry up. If this is the case, let nature take it's course! Just make sure if this happens that the pups get extra food. Then mother's job will take a different course. Offering them warmth and teaching appropriate canine behaviour.

| Well, you cannot have just one, they are herd animals and will become very sad and depressed if they don't have a friend, so then you should maybe get a little heard of them, like 3 or 4. He-He, ask him if he wants to carry 90 lb. hay bales in that cold Canadian winter you have up there and carry out fresh hot water 4 times a day when it freezes every few hours! That might change his mind! No really, they are wonderful animals, I sometimes get sad I can't go on a hike with my little goaties, they are very mischievious though.

| Well, the puppies are readily eating their food now, but have no interrest in water yet. I have noticed the amount of pee when they go is way down and I am concerned they are getting dehydrated. It is just a small amount, not like a week ago. (maybe the size of a nickle) Last night I gave them food with a lot of water in it but how should I get them to begin lapping water? They eat the dry food happily but I will have to water it down to make sure they are getting water too. I don't think mom's milk is hydrating them enough. Any advise would be appreciated. I have been swishing my finger in their water bowl and they see that water is there, but won't lap any really. They will only lick a drip off my finger if I put it to their face.

| As long as the pups are still nursing they should getting plenty of fluids. In my 12 years of breeding I have never had any concerns about the pups not drinking enough water. As the mom starts producing less milk the pups should increase their water intake. How are the puppies stools? Usually if a pup is not getting enough fluids they might get constipated. If you feel their stools are to hard then you can add a little karo syrup to their water but I have never had to do that. The last few years I don't even give mine moistened dry food, they just get ground dry food. When they are around 6 weeks I add a tiny bit of canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice puppy food to the dry food and they get that twice a day in addition to their dry food. |

| I have been using the dry mixture you suggested last week. They like it and so does mom. I actually have to get mom out of there sometimes because she'll steal their food and leave me having to grind and sift another batch. (she gets the same kind of food but it's not ground) I also have been supplementing with wet food twice a day, they really like that. So, you think it is normal for them to pee only about a nickle sized amount? Last night it was slightly larger than that so they are probably o.k. I just want to be certain they are getting what they need. I go back to school next week and I won't be around them 24/7. Thanks for the advise. Their stools are normal, just the pee looked small to me.

| It sounds like they are doing great. When they are that little they do just pee a tiny amount. How old and how big are your pups now? I know it will worry you leaving them alone while you are at school. How long will they be alone? |

| They are over 5 weeks now. I will have to leave for 4 hours, so it's not too bad. Someone will be here to watch my little boy.
