Rehoming Yorkies I just wanted to bring up a point about rehoming Yorkies. I have contacted various people about giving a bit older yorkies a new home, and they are always asking what they paid for the pup or close to it(sometimes more)! Now I understand that expenses have occured, but what I don't understand is why they don't understand that an older pup is not the same as a new young pup from a breeder. Usually it is a case of not being housetrained by an older age, which makes it much harder for the new owner to accomplish. Plus the older pups were usually bought from hopefully a breeder or at worst a pet shop, either of which has usually issued some type of guarantee, which is no longer good for the second purchaser. This to me is a BIG factor. Having the guarantee is worth pretty much alot of the price and LACK of one means taking a big chance for ALOT of money. Anyway.... I would have no problem getting an older pup but just don't understand when people want so much money when bad habits are already in place and NO guarantee is there. Personal sellers have NO obligations after the pup has left! I in NO WAY am against adopting pets in need but just felt a need to state what I felt . I feel decent breeders should ask what they wish but just don't get the rehoming prices???????? Last edited by yorkieangel; 09-08-2005 at 03:25 PM.

I agree with you mostly. But what about the people that have a perfectly fine dog that is trained and socialized? Some people might just have to get rid of it because they are moving or their kids are allergic or torturing the pet. And they feel since their is nothing wrong with the pet, they in turn should get back exactly what they paid for it.

I, myself, have a problem with the price asked for an altered dog. If I don't want to breed the dog, for upwards of 1200, especially the site that continuously offers dogs under 3-4# for $5000 and up, that should be my choice to alter the dog. That's an awfully lot of money for a dog that isn't in the original package. Now for $5000, and smaller than 3#, I would want more for my money than just the animal. I guess overall what I'm saying is that I resent the quality of the dog being brought down to less than breeding size. For $5000, I want a champion blooded, champion sired, champion! And then to alter the dog up for adoption and want high prices on top of that? If I have to spay/neuter my dogs because they aren't suitable for my breeding program, I figure it's a business loss, kind of like losing a puppy. Granted I won't give the dog away but I can't see charging the price for an intact dog. I'm afraid I'm not making a lot of sense here, but I know how I feel. Sylvia

No, I totally agree on the guarantee. I was just pointing out some reasons on why people might sell an older dog for the same price they paid for it.
