| New to Yorkie Talk Looking for Friends Hi I am new to this website. Although I have been reading so many good things here. I have a little girl named Tayah she is almost 2 years old and she has gone into her 2nd heat. She started to bleed red today and i was wondering if it is ok to let my 6 month old boy tie with her or is it better to use the breeder i have set up for her? And if she started to bleed red today how long has she been into her heat cycle? This is my first time with yorkies and i am fully prepared ( I HOPE WITH YOUR HELP ). I was used to the bigger dogs and yorkies take alot more time and attention. I am willing to give my all. Thank You for all the advice. Tayah and I are looking to meet new people. I hope we can find some friends here!! Renee Last edited by rbelland; 02-28-2009 at 05:15 AM. |

| First of all welcome to Yorkie Talk. You will find lots of valuable information on here. A 6 month old puppy is far to young to use for breeding. Most people recommend that the males be at least a year old even though some are capable of breeding a few months younger than 1 year. Can you tell us about your female? How big is she? Breeding is a huge responsibility and I must say that breeding yorkies is not like breeding many of the other breeds. There are many risks involved. Has your female been checked out by a vet? Best of luck to you and I wish you the best. |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Hooray 1st of all...........welcome to a fellow Nebraskan, and being in Bellevue, you're not to far from me! I love seeing new "neighbors" joining Yorkie Talk. So, welcome, welcome, and please stick around. In answer to your question; agreed that a 6 month old male is to young to be used for breeding. If you wish to breed your girl this time, you will need to find her a different stud. Counting the first day of bleeding as day one, the average fertile period is between days 9-15, give or take a day or two. You will need to keep your little male and her apart or watch them like a hawk during her entire heat cycle (21 days or so) to ensure that they don't tie. There are many other aspects to breeding yorkies; I'd be happy to help you in any way. I've only had one litter myself so far, but have learned so much about yorkies and breeding since getting my first about 4 years ago. Feel free to PM me if you wish. Also, check out this website - Canine Reproduction Video and Book on Breeding and Whelping dogs by Debbie Jensen for dog breeders and Whelping Supplies needed to deliver puppies. - it's my favorite...well, right up there with YT...

| BIG responsibility thats for sure! Tayah is 1 and a half. She weighs 6lb 14oz. She has been checked out by a vet. Our male (Harley) is still only 3lbs but as I said earlier he is only 6 months almost 7 and I was afraid to use him as a stud for her due to his age and not knowing his adult weight or close to the adult weight. I am for sure going to contact the lady I have set up for stud service. Actually the stud I am going to use is Harleys father. He is 2 and 1/2 lbs. Thank you so much for the information. I think this is great. I have been reading things on this website for a long time now and I think it is wonderfull!! Renee |

| In all honesty, if this is something you have to ask about, then you probably shouldn't be breeding her at all at this point. It sounds like you still have a lot of areas and things to consider and research and understand first. Aside from the fact that chances are not in your favor that a 6 month old could sire a litter, why would you want him too? He's still a puppy. You have no way of knowing if he will possess qualities as an adult that even should be bred. Also, part of being fully prepared to take the step to responsible breeding means having a good knowledge of your female's heat cycle and when she would be fertile for breeding. You are considering breeding her and you aren't even sure how to tell how long she's been in heat... Do you have a breeding mentor? These are issues he/she should be there to guide you through "in person." From the sounds of it, you may benefit from progesterone testing to help you better evaluate your female's fertile period. |

| Wow Unbelievable!!! This is why I am here. To learn from experience. Yes I have a mentor and I am doing estrus tests for her. But it is also nice to hear what others have to say. (or not) So far I have been reading these threads for a long time, so much good stuff. And as for the last post Thanks for the MENTORING IT SURE HELPED

| If you decide to use the other stud with her, be sure that you have an iron clad agreement with the owner and that you have it all in writing. As for you 6 month old...I don't think that you could even register a litter he would produce given his age. (Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.) Give him time to mature and have him evaluated and tested first. Also, it's generally not preferred to put a first time brood bitch with a first time stud. |

| Welcome! I would use the stud, because the owner will have a lot of answers and experience to share with you as far as the tie and show you what goes on until your little guy gets bigger. You should ask her to be a mentor to you, and along with other sources and YT you can learn a ton more than what you already know. |
