| Breeders help requested please baby yorkie Hi all! The babies were born on Monday and my question is...some of you may have seen the pics in the YT nursery. Question: I have a tiny girl who is 2 3/4 oz when she was born. All the others are up to 3 and 3.5 now except her. She was 2nd to smallest. She has been the exact same weight on Monday as she is today. She doesn't seem to be gaining or losing. Any suggestions? Seems to be a good "feeder" as well.

| ~I've never experienced this and sorry I don't have any suggestions. But you say she is nursing? Are you sure she is getting enough milk? Maybe try letting her nurse a couple of times a day by herself. She really should have gained some weight by now. If that doesn't seem to help, maybe you should take her to the Vet. Good Luck! |

| I have had 2 itty bitty ones in the past 3 months . One had to be hand fed and weighed 7 oz at 4 weeks. This last little male I had weighed a bit under 2 oz he is now 4 weeks and 11 oz. Growing but not even close in size to his litter mates. As long as the pup is not loosing anything and seems vigorus nursing I think you are okay. I would not worry yet if it was mine as long as there is not loss in weight. Does the pup have to compete for nursing at all with the others? They are only 3 days if born on MOnday I would just keep a good eye on the pup if it starts to drop anything even one gram I would be stepping in to supplement a few feedings. Or alone nursing time with mom. Is the pup still on and nursing when her milk lets down? |

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | Have you checked for cleft pallet? Maybe she seems to be nursing but she's not taking any in? I've never had any pups that didn't gain weight.

| I am assuming you will be going in to your vet for dews and tails? He or she should give the pup a good examination to see if there is any problems? Puppy isnt raspy or sounds funny when nursing? Good idea to check for cleft palate I have had puppies hold steady for a day or two on there weight. Pup has to be getting something if there is no weight loss. Has puppy gained anything since this morning? |

| At 2 days old it can be hard to tell about their overall vigor if there's no weight gain. You can try pulling up on the skin on the back to see if it has good spring back. Compare the little one's skin reaction to the more vigorous pups. If her skin is slower to spring back than the others', she is not as well hydrated as she should be so should be supplemented. Also, just compare her to the other pups for general vigor. She shouldn't feel limp or in any way weaker than her littermates. If she's not gaining she should not have her tail and dew claws done. I had a very small one back in October that was slow to gain (even with supplemental hand feedings). The vet waited on her until she was 15 days old to do her tail and claws. He explained that size and vigor were key to his decision to hold off and that it wasn't more traumatic on her to wait since her development was slower than her littermates. She went through the procedure just fine and today, at 4 months old, she is a 1 1/2 furball of energy. Best of luck with your little one. |

| I didn't think you could wait that long either but it seems better to wait than put a baby through that if it isn't thriving. I'm not sure but it seems like they aren't as biologically old if they aren't developing as quickly as the others so possibly the nerve endings aren't as developed either. Anyway, my girl did just fine and showed no distress after having it done so late. |

| What I do is hold the tiny one while the other pups use their energy to get the let down. When I see them all pulling back steady, I pull the bigger pup off the back teat and put the tiny one on. Nothing beats mothers milk. |
