Hi Donna, Has the little one begun to gain weight? Just my experience but if they're not gaining weight (& especially if they drop any weight at all) I'll supplement a feeding or two a day and continue to monitor the weight at least 2-3 times per day at that age.

Put the smallest one on the tits closest to the tail these are biggest and fill up with more milk. You may need to alternate them . I weighed my pups twice a day. If I didn't see weight gain I used a syringe first to get a little bit in their mouths. I used karo syrup until I bought Nutri cal for puppies. The drops are better for new borns but not easy to find. I used to add it to the supplemental milk and make a thin liquid of the milk, karo, and nutrical. I would feed it to the pups after they nursed. I noted a weight gain of an ounce a day after about the 1week. My smallest never did catch up to the others but she did gain weight steady. She is very healthy now. How much food and fluids is the mother taking in? Have water available all the time. I added chicken I cooked with my slow cooker, and I cooked beef liver and I added this to her food 3 times a day besides having kibble out for her all the time. I gave the whelping pudding and a calcium supplement every day. | |

I am sorry to hear that Katie is having problems. I just retired a BIRO girl since I have stopped breeding but she never had milk for 2 litters so I hand-raised them. I also used Esbilac with small amt of Karo added. And, a smidgen of BeneBac every day. The puppies thrived and grew pretty rapidly on that. Weighing AM and PM was essential...You have to monitor their poo and pee and make sure there is NO constipation. That can take a puppy down very quickly. I gave my mom every liquid I could think of plus pro-biotics. I also kept canned chicken broth down for her and she drank that well but she just could not produce milk. Good luck with your mom and her babies. Keep us posted...

We had a singleton on Monday and I give mom kibble mixed with a little goats milk. This seem to help her and she loves the goats milk. Good luck.

Indigo. when you change your bitches food and start giving her milk products, does she get diarrhea or does her stools stay firm? I'm just asking because my bitch is hopefully holding young ones and after she whelps I'd like to supplement her feedings but I'm afraid of the mess that might cause. If I even change her kibble she gets the runs.

I haven't had any stool problem with my bitch, but I only give her a small amount of the goats milk at a time. I gradually introduce puppy food into her diet about 2 weeks before she is due. She is mostly eating the goats milk and chicken now. I would like to see her eat more kibble, but this is the same as she did last time. My boy was small 3.5 ounces at birth Monday night. He had his tail docked and dew claws removed today and he now weighs 5.1 ounces and so far doing well. Denise
