| Help-I need input!!! My mama yorkie had 5 babies 23 days ago. She is now not wanting to nurse. She growls at her babies & sometimes even snaps at them. We have to put her in the taxi with them so she can't get out to feed them. She whines and barks and wants to get out. Sometimes when the babies are just walking near her she growls & snaps at them. Do you think she is trying to wean them? I need info. PLEASE. Should I try feeding the babies something to supplement them? Thanks in advance, you guys are wonderful!!! |

| So..these little ones are3 1/2 weeks old? Yes,if you are good with a syringe and know what you are doing you need to try to feed them some JUST BORN..you can get it at WAL-MART.. every couple of hours..If she is being mean to them..I would be afraid I was taking a chance with the puppies if she is growling at them? You can pm if you need too. |

| She is snapping at them? Maybe it has something to do with their teeth coming in, but mama dogs usually don't waen their puppies before 6 weeks?? I don't think I would lock her up in a pet taxi with them if she is snapping at them she may hurt one of them. Good luck!

| Thanks, she just started this a couple of days ago. I trimmed the babies nails and thought that would help but she seems to keep getting more frustrated with them everyday. |

| I didn't mean for that to sound mean but that is the only way we can get her to feed them. She won't volunterily lay & let them nurse very often, she tries to stay clear of them but watches them closely. |

| Hi, My little girl started cutting her puppies way back on nursing at 4 weeks. I started feeding them mushed up puppy food and I would make her lay down and make her nurse. She didn't snap at them but would growl and jump out of the whelping box. If I stood there and watched her she would let them nurse, but as soon as I left she would jump out. Whitney |

Oh, I didn't think you were being mean or anything, I was just meaning I would be careful locking her in with them since she is snapping at them she may hurt one of them or something. I hope you figure out why she is acting like this! Good luck! Also I wanted to ask how often is she feeding them on her own? At this age the puppies don't need to eat but every 4 hours or so along with the puppy food.

| She is only nursing about every 5 or 6 hours, but we have to make her. And I didn't know when I should start the puppy food. Is canned puppy food okay? Or should I get some dry and run it through the salad shooter? |

| If they can stand or at least sit up you can make a gruel for them. Just make sure you do not leave it in there, so they do not choke/drown. I use warm water mixed with Gerber rice cereal, add about tsp of karo and half a jar of baby food (chicken flavor). It works pretty well. I have a female that weans her puppies at 5 weeks but have never seen one snap or growl at their pups to wean them. Every girl is different I guess. Check her nipples to make sure they are not hot or swollen, if they are infected that could be very uncomfortable for her. If she has just decided that she is done with them you may have to bottle feed them until they can eat the gruel. Best of luck...
