| just lost a puppy..tell me what did i do wrong??? my pregnant yorkie is supposed to be due on july 13th. I took her to the vet last weekend, and he say this one needed a c section, because the puppy is big, with big head, will come feet first, and the mother is tiny. (my baby only weighs around 4 lbs.) so ok, I plan to bring her back to this vet this tuesday for confirmation. this is my first time to breed dog, i never plan to breed her, since shes so small, but accident do happen... and then last night at 2am she delivered. she had no sympton of giving birth. still eat dinner at 8pm, no diarrhea, no vomit, no milk on her breast, none of that sympton. suddenly at 11 pm she started nasting and looked very uncomfortable. I think its normal, because I read mother start nesting 1 week before delivery. suddenly at 1.30 am I heard sound like shes having an upset stomach, and I see the baloon sac comes out partly from her vulva. im so shocked. i really dont know what to do, because in my mind im having a plan c section. i didnt dare to pull the sac, and obviously she need help, since its a big puppy. so im busy calling my vet and heading to his home. when i get there the sac in entirely gone, i see 2 back feet dangling around, and green / black substance coming out. so the vet pull the puppy out with all his power, he said its too late to save the puppy, hes gone long time ago. and it did come out lifeless, but the mother is ok.. i mean, what do i do worng? i feel so sorry for that lil guy. the vet said this happen because of my lack of experience. he say i shouldnt let the sac be torn, should handle her with extra care. but i read alot of info saying the puppy can still survive even the sac is torn and the umbilical cord cut off..can my vet make wrong decision?? now the mother seems off her feet, she still eat, but looks confused at times, shes just running around the house probably searching for the baby...what should i do?? i feel so sorry.. i wish i've been more prepare. cant tell you how much im sorry for that lil guy and the mom... |

| I'm so very sorry for you. Quote:
The mother will most likely recover, but I wouldn't try to breed her again. You're lucky you didn't lose her too. I'd have her spayed as soon as the vet says she's up to having it done. Another pregnancy/birth could kill her. Dogs that small really aren't meant to be bred, regardless of pedigree. | |

| I agree with the previous poster. Your gal is just a little thing and accidents can always be avoided. If you really want to become a breeder you need to learn how to deal with whelping complications. Knowing how to handle a dry birth and milk a pup down the birth canal is essential. I'd see if I could find a mentor as learning these things through reading is very difficult and can cost a pup his life. I hope your gal gets settled soon and you spay her to prevent losing her in the future.

| The sac torn and cord cut is after being born, outside of mom. I try to keep the water sac intact always. Not to beat a dead horse, but she should have never been bred accidently or otherwise. I'm glad you're girl is okay. The dead puppy, sadly was a casualty that could've been prevented. I hope she recovers well, give her lots of lovin'. |

| whelping It is so easy to be a Monday morning quarterback... SOMETIMES..the sac stays intact, comes out and the dam or breeder tears it open, PERFECT all is well!!!!!! SOMETIMES the dam rips the sac open as she is whelping...puppy still inside dam..and there is no way to stop a dam unless you duct tape her mouth shut...I do not panic if the dam chooses to open the sac, head first puppy is ususally out fairly fast...if it is feet first, you must take a dry cloth and gently pull out the puppy...as long as the placenta is attached, the pups are fairly safe, once the placenta tears away, the puppy needs to be out of the mom asap... BUT if you see dry feet sticking out...unless your vet lives in your basement, you do not have time to go to them..you must deliver the pup asap... I had a recent email from a first time breeder asking me how long the puppies head could safely remain in the mom..sac was torn off and placenta was already out...it has been out for 20 mins...which was about 19 mins too long...in that case a live pup would have resulted with a gently pull...that was the breeders fault and the pup died. In your case...you had the bad luck of a small bitch and one large puppy, backwards and dry.....even that gives me sweat beads..I know things can and mostly will be tough. PS....everyone knows there is a "water bubble" that comes first..THEN the actualy sac the puppy is in? Breaking a water bubble is not like breaking the sac with umbical cord attached to it... RIGHT....bitches break water bubbles all the time... |

| Thanks YorkieRose, good answer I AM experienced and had nearly the same thing happen over the weekend. Dam went into labor early with a large breach puppy, nothing we could do but rush to hospital to minimize further damage. |

| I completley agee with Pat...She has given you good advice... That being said I had a pup come back feet first that I could not for the life of me budge out...I rushed to the vet, the pup died before I got there and between myself, my vet and another vet none of us could get that baby out....We did have to do a c-section to get the pup out and to save the other puppy yet to be delivered... I would suggest that you schedule a spay with your vet as soon as your vet is comfortable doing the spay to prevent any further accidents...You wouldn't want this to happen again...My girl was spayed and is now living the life of luxury!
