This litter is really make us all "study" about preemies. I have had "tinies" which my vet has said were premature...they never looked like Chloe's litter (they had hair).... and I have lost a few.

My vet did tell me that sometimes it is best just to give them the glucose (sugar) water.... that they cannot digest the milk... or really dilute the milk...
(this was after I was telling him that I'd be feeding a pup and it would just
be coming out the other end (poop)).

Those links to preemies were very helpful.

Hope there is some good news today.

I would betube feeding them also,your vet can show you how.

A good point was made about feeding...I would tube with an electrolite solution the vet will sell you...tinies and preemies are two different puppies...I have had full term 1 and 2 oz pups, with a full covering of coat, no pink skin showing..and they were breathing, moving well..they were full developed, just tiny..I still diluted the formula for the first few days...

I used Nutra-Drops for the tinies...very different he Nutra-Cal....

I'd go with a glucose solution or Fading Puppy solution rather than formula, their bodies are probably not ready for formula, as for digesting it. Could cause diahhrea or make them sick to their stomachs, which would be worse. Then they'd dehydrate and cry. I'd also be subq'ing fluids to keep them hydrated.

I was devastated for Jenn yesterday as things developed. I was pretty busy with Pearl so didn't really notice when she first posted pics and had to look back when someone commented on them having no hair. I'd never seen a preemie pup before then and had never considered what to do if I had to deal with that. This is something I'll definitely be researching....it's a gap in my knowledge that I can't afford to have. Hopefully, the remaining pups make it. There's been so many tragedies with pups here lately. It takes a toll on everyone to hear bad news about these little angels.

Hi all,

I am so sorry that I havent been able to post earlier. Sadly, all four passed away. Ugh, I am okay now, but poor Chloe is running around thinking that everything I pick up or move might have one of the pups in there.

Here is a recount of the day's events.
I obviously got no sleep and spent the majority of the night trying to bottle feed and get the pups to nurse - mostly to no avail. I called the vet this morning and they said to bring them over right away. I put them and Chloe in a basket with a towel, a warmed up bed buddy, and unplugged the heating pad and shoved it in there (thinking that it would at least hold some heat in on the way over). We drove, no windows open, with heat on (I am in NJ - must be in the high 80s or so today). We got to the vet. She was concerned the most about the smallest (the one that I was originally concerned about with the white spot). They gave the smallest one oxygen and gave both of the pups Dextrol (?). I had the larger pup suckling for a few minutes while we were there. We werent there long because the vet called an emergency hospital in Langhorne PA and sent us there. Within about 10 of the car ride over, the larger of the two passed away. We were about 5 minutes away (about a 23 min car ride total) and the smallest one passed away. It was so sad. I walked in with the pups and Chloe in the basket. The poor secretary was asking for info, but all I could do was shove the papers in her face to read because I was crying so hard I couldnt speak.

A nurse came rushing out and I told her that I thought the pups had passed. She grabbed the basket from me and ran in the back. A vet came out about a minute later to tell me that they did pass away. YorkieRose had it on the money (although I was TRYING to think they could make it). The vet said that they didnt have any hair on their legs or feet and that their lungs were not fully developed. It was hard to pay attention, but I think he was saying that no hair on the paws/legs is an indicator that the lungs were not developed (maybe they happen around the same time?). In any case, they did check Chloe for me and they said her temp, etc was normal and to just keep an eye on her temp.

With that said, we came home about 3.5 hours after rushing out the door initially. She is running around looking for the pups. I must say that she is back to her normal size - occasionally eating and occasionally looking happy. She is on my lap right now and will be in a bath very soon. She almost seems to forget about the pups for a few minutes, then runs around again to look for them.

I heard before that a small stuffed animal is good for them to have. I am hoping that my fiance will be able to get one on his way home from work. I absolutely have to go to work tomorrow. Do you think she will be okay? Should I have someone come over and hang out with her?

Everyone - thank you so so much for everything. Your support, love, and prayers were so thoughtful and so very much needed. I thank you for helping me to make it through.......My grandmother passed away last week and now this - your pick-me ups were amazing!

I meant to say too - The vet told me that they were so premie, that they would not have survived even if they were born in the hospital.

So so so sorry for your loses. Words can not describe how sorry I am for you right now. Hope mom is doing well and you too of course. once again so so sorry for your loses.

I am very sorry to hear this Jenn. It is not your fault, you did everything you could have for them. It was just too early for them to be born. I sure hope Miss Chloe settles down some more, her hormones are just keeping those puppies in her mind. She will be ok.

My bitch lost her singleton puppy due to premature placental separation, required an emergency section but the puppy was without oxygen for too long (never again will I let an ER vet talk me into doing oxytocin shots and wasting a half hour when I darn well know that the bitch is not having any contractions, the placenta has separated and we need to section immediately but that is another story). Fancy pined for her puppy even though she never even saw it. I found two toys the size of puppies in my stash of new toys and gave them to her, she had no interest in one of them but carried the other for weeks. I would pick it up and tell Fancy what a beautiful baby it was etc. After about 3-4 weeks I caught her tossing it in the air and playing with it like it was a toy and not a puppy so I figured she was back to normal. It really did help to distract her if nothing else while her hormones and instincts were telling her she was supposed to be caring for something small.

Please know you and Chloe are in my thoughts and how badly I feel for you for having to go through this. Premature puppies are really unusual and without the necessary lining for their lungs they could not have survived. When you think of how little time puppies have to develop in utero it makes sense that if they are born several days too soon they won't be ready to cope with the world yet.

I am so sorry for the loss of Chloe's pups. Please know that you did everything possible for the survival of those pups and for that, you should be proud of yourself.

I, as well as others, have now learned something due to these unfortunate circumstances that will be very valuable in the future regarding preemie yorkie births.

So sorry you lost all the puppies. I cried reading your post about the trip to the vet. It's amazing that you were able to keep the remaining two alive as long as you did (kudos to you!).

This is one sad story that we have all learned alot from.

I am so sorry for you loss. I have have had females deliver prematurely in the past so I know how heart breaking it is. You little momma will be just fine. It will take her a few days to get over the initial shock. Just continue to monitor her temperature and also keep an eye on her breasts in case she started to develop mastitis. Give her some extra loving. (((hugs)))

I feel like I have learned a lot from this thread because I had never seen 55 day puppies.I PMed you Jenn. Just wanted to let you know that everyone here including myself know you tried everything possible but sometimes things happen that are out of our control. Take care of Chloe and yourself. Both of get some well deserved rest and give her lots of hugs & kisses from all of us here.

Um, I am not sure this is the time or place for this kind of question. She just lost all 4 pups.

I am sorry you lost the remaining pups. Dont be hard on yourself you did everything you could.

Jenn just know that you are in all our prayers, you did everything possible to keep those babies alive don't be hard on your self. I know if you could you would would have done more. We are all thinking of you. Take care of chloe and love on her as much as you can.

Losing a puppy, puppies, or the dam is always a possiblity regardless of how long someone has been breeding.

At another time your view would probably be whole heartedly endorsed...but I believe most breeders here have more compassion than to voice that at this particular time.

i agree...what was done has already pass...no need to dwell on it...show some support and lets get through this together...

My yorkie had puppies this past saturday, I was so nervous because it was my first time delivering puppies. I found that the mother does most of the work, you just have to do your best to keep her comfortable and make sure that all is going well. All I did was help to remove the puppy from the sack and cut the cords because she had some difficulty with that. Hope all went well!
