| Penelope is in Labor!!!! OK, so I chickened out. I was going to try and do this whelping thing alone. Peneople started her labor about 30 mins to an hour ago. She squeels in pain with every contraction. This freaked me out, so I took her directly to the vets. It's probably normal, but since she is so small (3.6 lbs) I don't want to take any chances. The vet asked me to leave, he thinks I will stress her out because I am really nervous. So I am waiting patiently to see how it all goes. But I wish I was in with her. |

| Wasn't the vet concerned that you bred a 3.6lb yorkie? How much does the father weigh? |

I was watching my Nephew's yorkie pup and apparently this triggered my female to go into heat. I had no idea she was in heat or that they ever mated. I found out about 3 weeks ago when I took her to the vet for vomiting. The male was her size at 6 months, but who knows what size the pups will be. But they did an ultra-sound and my vet was very comfortable with letting her deliver. So that the stoy in a nut shell. She's in good hands. | |

| Good luck on a successful whelping. Please keep us posted. I know you are stressed out, but try to relax. Your vet will be able to take quick action if she gets into any trouble. Hugs to you both |

| It's all over! Penelope is home with her 2 pups. 1 boy 4.2 ounces and 1 girl 4.0 ounces. She had them natural with some help from the vet. They are doing great and moving around well. The female has latched on too her teet and not letting go The boy hasn't been about to nurse yet. 'm trying to help him. Any suggestions? |

| Congrats! Those are good size puppies for such a tiny girl. You can make a sugar water mixture with warm water and karo syrup. Then draw it up in a syringe and place a drop on the nipple, and then try to get him to nurse again...usually works!

| Good Luck! First, good luck with your girl. I think you have done the right thing by having her whelp at the vet's office. Whelping is scary and with a girl that tiny it is scarier. Also, no scolding about the accident, that stuff happens. But to clear up a misconception here so that people viewing the thread don't get confused-- having a male dog around will not draw a female into heat. That is how it works with cats, but not dogs. Just not how their cycles work-- now she could have been "drawn in" by other bitches in season (like in people, the dormitory effect) but not by the presence of a male dog. How many are you expecting? Take deep breaths, all will be fine even if a section becomes necessary : ) Just make sure that once mom is home that she is eating well and getting enough calcium. Dogs of any size can get eclampsia but I worry the most about the smaller ones. |
