| Should I breed? Can anyone give me some pros and cons of breeding? All of my children will be in school this Aug. and I am considering starting to breed as I will be home all day and have time to spend. Thanks |

| Sorry, just couldn't help it. There have been many threads from people asking similar questions. You may want to look back into previous threads here as you could learn alot. There are some good breaders in YT who may give you their grave warnings, but the first question, I think, is WHY? You need to think hard about your reason for breading. Good luck, and welcome to YT, by the way

| I think it depends on WHAT you are breeding. Number one is to make sure you have the very best representation of the breed. BOTH male and female should be as close to the standard as possible. Number two, they should be tested for genetic defects as well as any other potential health problems. The pedigrees should be researched to determine the overall quality of the lines you breed. There is so much more.. but that is just a starting place. Start with the breeder you got your yorkie from. go to shows in your area and talk to other breeders.

| I would go to some dog shows in your area and find a mentor that way. Maybe they can go over your dog and point out any flaws or tell you if she is breeder quality. Best of luck!! Go to infodog. It will tell you where and when the shows are. |

| Think it over thoroughly. Think about your reason and possibly a mission statement like conversation with self. If it's for money, I say no. If it's out of boredom during the day, no. They'll require alot more than that and will take time from the kids also. If you've researched, studied the breed (including going to some shows like above poster suggested) and have their best interest in heart you're one step closer. |

| Here is an article on the subject...hope it helps. If you decide not to breed maybe you could spend the extra time volunteering at your local animal shelter. Breeding Your Dog

| NO - not until you've spent lots of time reading, asking questions, and listening to the dedicated breeders on this forum! Then, step back and ask more questions. It's not the hokey pokey!

| Great advice here. I can tell you're in the "beginging to think about it" stage, and the fact that you are asking about the pro's and con's of breeding tells me you are responsible. This is a sensitive topic here because the ones who breed know how many things can go wrong, and your bitch could have a difficult time. You even have a risk of loosing her (not sure what the % is) as well as the pups. Breeding small dogs, I take from reading here in YT, does come with higher health risks than other larger breeds. There is also the issue of adding to the dog "pup"ulation (clever eh? he he) when the shelters are full of unwanted dogs. The puppy mills are a terrible business and dog lovers are very upset about people making money off of breeding dogs. The dogs are usually kept in deplorable conditions and this is very upsetting to us. This is a very big problem, and people who love dogs can get very emotional about breeding. So, you will hear these opinions about people breeding for money. Some here are so upset about it (deservingly) that they have been too harsh with people such as you, who ask about breeding. I have to say that so far, the replies have been great. I'm proud of YT with this thread. It is my opinion that helping people such as you decide whether to breed or not, by providing good information, or guidance is a more positive route than getting mad about your inquiry, especially since you are just "thinking" about it Good luck with your research and thought process.

| By the way, there were some suggestions of good books on breeding in previous threads. You can probably find them if you look back even a month or so. If you decide to go that route.

| I'm not a breeder, but I had considered breeding until I started doing research and reading here. I would suggest you read everything you can and ask questions. Maybe try to attend a show and talk to breeders there. If you are still serious about it after that, try to find someone to mentor you. There is so much more involved than you realize.

| Thanks! Thank you to everyone who has responded. It has been over a year now and I have done alot of research and found a mentor and stud provider in one less than 2 miles from my home. I am so excited to announce I will be joining the breaders population sometime this year! I am starting with one female and going from there. Wish me luck and thanks again. |
