3 Attachment(s) Well I wasn't sure about taking Stewie away from her before she went into labor. I knew I was going while they were being born... I will go ahead and take him out now since you have done this before and know what you are talking about. They just bark all the time when they are not together..I just checked her temp and it is still down. It is at 98.5 right now. I cannot go to bed until 12:00 so I am going to keep watching her. I am going to post some photos of her and Stewie, but PLEASE keep in mind that I totally butchered both of their coats. Stewies rubber band got stuck in his hair and I had to cut it out.. Kallie has a real cottony coat and wearing underwear for 35 days totally matted it up so I decided to shave it off.. I don't think I will be a professional dog groomer anytime soon....Please don't laugh at my poor babies.... |
i think you did a fine job on the cuts...by the way where in Tn do you live? |
Good luck with your babies. We are waiting for the good news, hope it is soon. :) |

No babies yet! Her temp is down to 98.5 and is staying there.. Last night she couldn't get comfortable so we went outside for a minute and then when we came back in I tried to give her some water and she wouldn't take it. She hadn't eaten in 1 day so I tried hand feeding her and she finally ate. She would not eat unless I sat right there and watched her. Usually she wants me to leave and she will scarf it down but not last night.. She wants me to hold her ALL the time.. She has been cleaning herself alot last night and this morning.. She is crying for me now so I better go check on her!! |

Just peekin in to see how were all doin. Were all here for ya and sending good thoughts and prayers for a safe, easy, daytime whelp! Keep us posted! (aunts & uncles waiting room is ready & stocked!!) I'm so excited!! :aimeeyork |
Definitely xray. We'll all feel better - this is a group effort. (tee hee). |
Hi, I would not put tons of blankets in your whelping area. The puppies can get rolled up in them and lost ! I use just 1 thick bath towel only. You can use a heat pad with cover on low under the towel. I would start feeding her puppy food too and all she wants to eat. Mine sometimes have a dark weird poop right before they whelp. I use a 28 qrt plastic storage box for walmart for my box. It's just tall enough so the pups can't get out until they are older. Put the heat pad in only 1/2 the box so mom or pups can moce off it if they want to. To hot is not good . 90% of the time ( for mine) the temps go up and down for about 1 wk and then down to 97- 98. Most of mine get thier milk in the day of, or 2 days before. Make sure you get a after hrs phone number for a vet that can help you in case of trouble. Mine seem to like to have their pups in the middle of the night when vets are not open. Good luck. |
good luck! keep us updated on the puppies! sending love that everything goes smoothly! |
just read this thread...how exciting, wishing you and the momma to be the best of luck! |
No babies yet! I made an appointment for 10:50 in the morning for an xray..Hopefully it wil tell me enough so that I can relax a little. Everyone fears the unexpected and Lord knows I am fearing it pretty bad right now. I never thought about her pups getting lost so I will take some of her blankets out. Can I give her a bath tonight or do I need to wait until after the puppies are born.. |
Don't expect too much from the x-ray. It will be exciting to see definite pups, however, the vet's sentence will probably end with "....or there could be more). That doesn't help a bit. I've had a vet SHOW me 5 definites and we had 4. Same thing happened to another member on here at the same time. Sometimes they say one is too big when, infact, there isn't one too big. However, for some reason, you will find comfort in seeing an x-ray. I don't get x-rays anymore unless I FEEL something may be wrong. Can't wait 'til tomorrow to see what shows up.:) Now what the x-ray can tell you is if the pups are lined up and ready to go. HOWEVER (don't hate me), mine were all lined up, she didn't have the pups, took her back 48 hours later...another x-ray....pups were out of position. I'm just trying to help, believe it or not (smile). |
If you can bathe her comfortably, I'd do it. She will get messy with the birth, so its nice to have her clean to start with. I use pee pads in my whelping pen. After each pup I can wrap it up and throw it away with all the mess, and with a new pad underneath, we are ready for the next puppy. Keeps everyone cleaner and cuts down on the laundry. Towels work too of course. I also buy 2 or 3 yards of fleece fabric, cut it in half and wash. These provide a soft flat surface for the bed. I've never had a puppy get lost in the folds, and the fleece is warm also. When my puppies go to their new homes I send one of these blankets with them so they have a familiar smell and feel. You'll feel better after you see the vet and have an xray. |
I'd only bathe her if she isn't one that gets all stressed out from it. If she doesn't mind a bath, then I would. I don't bath Mamma after whelping until the 2nd or 3rd day. They have to be COMPLETELY dry before going back in with the pups. They also hate to be away for more than 2 minutes at a time. Don't encourage her to want to be away (thinking maybe she is feeling neglected by not spending time with you). It is kind of sad, it will feel like she isn't "yours" for awhile. However, the job she is doing will be TREMENDOUS and wonderful!:luvu: You'll feel more proud of her than you could have ever imagined:) |
Wow.....this is exciting! I know how nervous you must feel, this being your first and an unexpected pregnancy & whelping. But do stay calm, for your sake and for your mama. Chances are probably good that everything will go smoothly come birthing time. You just want to be sure you don't let her out of your site until after she has her pups. The bath you asked about could wait until after the whelp. Things may get pretty messy then, but the mom usually cleans herself and the pups up pretty well; with a little help from you as well. Good luck to you....use the numbers you were given and come here for help when you can during whelping. There will be plenty of us here to help however we can; even if it's just for moral support.....I know I'll be watching for the good news!:D Oh and I highly reccomend the xray. It gives you a good idea on the number of pups to expect and their size in comparison to an easy delivery. |
When my Molly had her pups she too liked to gather up her blankets and cuddle up in them, I was afraid of the puppies get lost so i took some fabric scraps about 8in. by 8in. that would not unravel and gave those to her. That way she could fix things the way she wanted and the scraps were small enough that i could always see the pups. Oh I think I was more nervous than she ever could be. I also used washable potty pads on the bottom, then I could just replace the dirty and wash all the bedding at one time. |
Oh and she had 7 puppies! |

Thank you guys for all the help.. I was sitting on the couch and looked over at her and she was digging fiercely. I waited for a few and she dug and dug and then laid on her belly and went to sleep. I went over there and checked her temp and it was 97.6 It has only been going down. What do you guys think? She is just laying there on her belly sleeping... |
OMG! Those clothes and bedding are the BOMB (I'm quoting Randy Jackson as we are watching American Idol)!! How cute! You must be very talented. |
