As far as milk goes, most have milk a few days before whelping, but of course others don't get milk until after they whelp. Wish we could be more of definate help, but there really is no rule of thumb for any of them. You will know when it is time, she will make it obvious. Hard to explain now, but you will know.
If it were me, I would set my alarm for every hour or two and check on her.

No need to set the alarm.. She sleeps right beside my bed and she will not rest unless I have my hand on her belly. I believe the fear wakes me up every hour to check on her... I sure do hope it is tomorrow though and not tonight...Thanks for the info about the milk... Maybe we still have another week to go.. Is it possible that she has more than 3 pups and that is why she is so big.. Has anyone ever been told they were having a small litter and had alot more??

I would think that her showing interest and spending time in her whelping area is a good sign that the time is getting closer, especially if she has not showed interest in it before.
Just noticed your new post before this....I'm betting no way will she wait another whole week. Xrays have been known to be wrong; sometimes a pup or two could be hiding behind another. I forgot.....did the vet sound sure about what he saw.....could you/the vet see the puppy skeletons clearly? I know when Lexie had her xray, it very clearly showed 4 pups & that's just what she had.

It is possible to have some hid behind the others on a side view x-ray, especially if it was fuzzy. She is very big in the pics.
Be careful with a spoiled Mom. They can tend to want to be with you instead of the babies.

Amanda, I don't know if anyone answered this...you will be able to tell she is contracting by the hardness of her belly and it will usually change shapes when she is contracting..she will also be bearing down, when all of this happens together, she's contracting..if you feel a pup is stuck...taking her to vet would be what to do if you have tried to get the pup out and if you absolutely "can't do it", but time is pressing for mom and a dying pup to waste time going to the vet...Do you have any gloves? ANy sterile gloves??? If you dont' have sterile gloves, take a new clean glove and pour betadine in a dish and put the glove on you hand and wash the gloved hand in the betadine, then rinse it off without touching it to anything else beside water, put the k-y on it and use it if you have to ...

Ruby's litter was supposed to be five, and she had seven. Coco's litter was supposed to be three and she had four. And these were with both sonograms and x-rays. You can never tell for sure with xray, etc.

You will know if there are any more puppies in there. They feel like long, stuffed socks on her sides. The uterus is more like a little ball. But I know experienced breeders have been fooled by this also.

I know what you mean by the fear waking you up. However, one litter I actually was so tired I fell asleep and woke up with a puppy mewing next to my head. Mom cleaned everything up and just she and the puppy were left in my bed. That was a singlton too that we had been very worried about. Puppy was fine -- but now I set my alarm. The alternative is just too scary.

Another thing all of mine have done when having contractions is to throw their head back and open their mouth slightly every time one hits them.
