Ruby's litter was supposed to be five, and she had seven. Coco's litter was supposed to be three and she had four. And these were with both sonograms and x-rays. You can never tell for sure with xray, etc.
You will know if there are any more puppies in there. They feel like long, stuffed socks on her sides. The uterus is more like a little ball. But I know experienced breeders have been fooled by this also.
I know what you mean by the fear waking you up. However, one litter I actually was so tired I fell asleep and woke up with a puppy mewing next to my head. Mom cleaned everything up and just she and the puppy were left in my bed. That was a singlton too that we had been very worried about. Puppy was fine -- but now I set my alarm. The alternative is just too scary.
