I just want to add one more thing to this:

I've been to our local animal shelter and to others in the Bay area. Most of those homeless dogs seem to be pit bull mix or other larger breeds. I know we have Yorkie rescues (and I'm thankful for them) but I believe that when the general public talks about all those dogs who need homes they are really referring to something other than a Yorkie.

All that Yorkie breeding out there seems to result in puppy placement rather than homelessness. After all Yorkies are the #2 most popular dog.

There are good and bad wherever we go. I'd be surprised to find anyone on here that is a "bad" breeder or who doesn't care about their dogs. We are the "choir" -- as in "preaching to the choir". Bless us all, and may we all have healthy, easy births and wonderful forever homes for our puppies.

thanks for all the great posts

I agree with what that thread said you posted above.
I just want to say this what I said was not ment to put anyone down.
I just really think i.m.p.o that yorkies like many other breeds be it toy
or whatever if it is akc tends to be a market and people jump on it.
Not all get into breeding for the WRONG REASON'S there are many caring breeders
out there but like anything there are those who are in strickly in it for
the business and that is to make money and that is where the quailty
goes down the tubes health attitude soundness the whole 9 yards.
Just breed responsible. QUAILTY first not QUAINTY of pups produced!!!

I've had 2 litters with Tiffanie and guess what I was new to it and even came on here like U and yep got my butt ripped but U know what 2 years later I've LEARNED here!!! & I'm still reading to learn. U can't just jump into breeding Yorkies and think it's all gonna be fine when their whelping day comes, there's so MUCH that COULD happen. My Tiffanie was 10 lbs and did just fine with her 1st litter of 4 and our 2nd litter was 6!!! Each litter a year apart. But that didn't mean I wasn't scared to death and thought about all the what if's I for one came here to learn and this is what I'm doing here even after 2 years I'm still learning new things about Breeding, Whelping and Raising Yorkies. We've chose to have Tiffanie spaded due to her throwing out 1 large puppy each whelping, then we adopted Sage who was selected for our Sir. Galahad!!! And we're NOT breeding anymore from June 2007 until The Spring of 2009, why might U ask??? Well Sage is from a different line and she is a different Yorkie then my Tiffanie was and I want to learn more about Whelping, Breeding, choosing a show quality puppy, pet quality puppy and raising them. See no one is a expert at this so please learn all U can!!! It's a MUST when it comes to Yorkies!!! Take my advice it's not easy as U may think. Are U prepared to spend endless sleepless nights with U're upcoming litter? Are U gonna sleep where U're Bitch is sleeping incase she starts whelping at night? Can U wake up at her every little move? Are U prepared to feed U're puppies if U're Bitch doesn't have enough milk? This means every hour on the hour if need be 24/7 not when U choose! Are U prepared if U're Bitch goes into labor and one of her babies gets stuck and can't come out? Do U know how to remove the sack from the puppy? What if the the puppy comes out and doesn't breath on it's own? Do U know how to get it breathing again??? This happened to 1 of our puppies in each litter, by the Grace of God I knew what to do and DID IT Right to help them both and they both made it just fine, without my knowing what to do, do U think those 2 babies could of made it without my help?? Heck NO. See there's more that U need to get prepared for in whelping Yorkies. Do U know how to keep those little babies warm??? Are U ready to be at U're Bitches' and Her Puppies every beck and call for the next 3 months? Are U prepared to have all the vet visits and get all their shots needed? What about C-Section? Do U know the warning signs if U're Bitch can't whelp on her own? What if she looses a puppy can U handle that??? Go to my web site and read a little about what I had to do with our last litter!!!! U may get upset with me but that's okay everything I've said is the truth and U MUST think about the what if's of whelping!!! I suggest U print all the advice here on YT U can find and have read it all before the day U're baby whelps!!! Read over everything U can day and night before she whelps. These is just some thoughts for U to think about before U're baby whelps. And I'm sure there is a lot of what ifs that I've missed and others can tell U about. There's nothing wrong with learning we all learn something new every day
I think this was well said.....even though is a lot of information for me the best info was the books.....BECAUSE....all the information is all together and if you have a question about something else you can flip to the page instead of coming on here and asking questions especially if you need the answer ASAP. Good luck on your litter and I really hope your dam and pups do okay.

They can be a few days early or late; also you may be off in your counting days a bit. Also, can you really count on the Yorkie breeder you know to be available at a moment's notice; even in the middle of the night? These babies have a habit of picking the most inconvenient time to whelp. They go on their schedule, not ours. I've never had a litter yet where the mother didn't need some help with the bags and cords, especially on the first one or two pups of the litter. They're sometimes just too big to be able to reach around and do what needs to be done. The heating pad and bulb suction are essential to have at the ready. For me personally, I've never had much luck with whelping boxes so now I place an old comforter in the corner, put the heating pad on that and then cover that with some towels. The mother uses the corner to help push. I change the towels as needed during the process and place the newborns aside on a heating pad (covered with a towel) while she is actually delivering the next one then return them to the mother when she is done with the birthing of that one. For me the whelping box just gets in my way. The room I use is a dedicated nursery and is away from the 'noisy' part of the house. Luckily, I've never had any complications so I can't speak from experience about other issues. Hope this helps and good luck with everything.

Can you be my mentor....hehe.

OMG you just described the scene at my house! I have 4 litters born between Feb 1 & 20, total 18 puppies. One was born 1.5 oz and needed special care and hand feeding the first four weeks, so that was a challenge. Now a person could spend all day moving from pen to pen cleaning up after them! Fortunately, I have two good helpers who take over while I come to my day job for some rest...
All I have to Say is HOLY COW.....
