pre welping help Maggie is on day #51 today. I need to know what I need to do before she has the puppies. Shame on me I haven't taken her to the vet yet because I am going to take her to get an x-ray this week. What day should I take her to have this done. Should I been preparing her welping box already? And what should I start getting together for the big day? Also which day do your Yorkies usually have their pups? Is it right at 60 days? |
Boy have you got some reading to catch up on! Why did you breed before you knew all of this stuff? Well time to get down to business. Go back and read all you can find on this forum. Order the following books from Amazon: Canine Reproduction and Whelping, A Dog Breeder's Guide and Puppy Intensive Care both by Myra Savant Harris, The Joy Of Breeding Your Own Show Dog by Ann Seranne and the Complete Book of Dog Breeding by Dan Rice, DVM. It's kinda like taking a crash course before performing surgery but it's the best that can be done on such short notice. Good luck and happy whelping. |
Well I have been reading for a while. I was asking one on one what yall do. Not the books. This is not my first puppy but it is my first female to have puppies on my own. My family dog had puppies all my life so I do have some experience of whelping. Any little hints or tips that help yall whelp would be nice! |
You didn't even know how often a bitch could cycle so it's not that unheard of for me to assume that more studying is called for. Bones calcify about 10 days before the bitch is due so xray should be done after that time. A bitch will whelp 63 days after she ovulated which is usually 10 days into her heat cycle. Her temp should be taken morning and night at least 1 week prior to due date and I set up her whelping box at that time. If you will get the book that I suggested it will give you a list of whelping supplies and you can have it on hand for future reference. We had a dog that puppies when I was a kid as well, in fact my parents raised Poms for a short while. Believe me it did not prepare me to be a breeder of these little angels. Don't sell your gal short, do your homework. |
I am trying to do my homework. That's why I'm asking professionals!!!! |
Just from experience...do a search on this forum and it will give you all the info you need on whelping!!!!! And just about anything else you need! I have not even had my puppies yet...she is in heat right now but they have tied multiple times...you will need a heating pad to put the puppies on for when she is having the other pups, suction bulb to suction their nose and mouth out...I can't tell you much because I am still learning myself, but do a search and all your question will be answered! There are many different ways you can do a whelping box but a search will tell you how to do it and all the supplies! Congrats and Good luck!!!! |

I would prepare her whelping box asap. She needs some time to get used to it. My dam gave birth on day 58 - she was a bit early. It's anywhere from day 56-65 or so but 60-63 days is the most common. There is so much to learn!! Good luck in your quest for knowledge. I hope you have enough time to read as much as you can. |

I think instead of asking her all these questions...ANSWER them! She has come to asks for pre whelping help...so she probably doesn't know all of this! Her baby is already pregnant so she has to be ready for it she has no choice! It's not like she asked it before her pup was pregnant! |
Everone does have to learn but it would be a lot better to learn at least the basics before you jump into breeding and have a bitch almost ready to deliver |

A lot of breeders on here get frustrated when people jump into breeding and never think ahead before they do it..so some of their frustration might show. I am not saying that is what she is doing but I have been on here two years and I have seen tons of people start in here the minute their dog is very close to whelping and they end up admitting that they bred their baby because it was cute and they wanted to see their babies babies or they thought it would be a good way to make some spare money. So they are somewhat frustrated because if you are planning to breed they feel you should have researched before getting to the end point and actually breeding and being on the verge of puppies. |

The research definately should have been done before hand, however since the babies are comming soon I would suggest reading as much as possible. Finding a mentor who lives close by is always helpful as well. There is a ton of helpful info here if you read thru the threads. Remember no question is a stupid one and theres aways some wonderful breeders here who can give great advice. I wish you the best! |
Congrats Yes you do have lots of reading....61 to 68 days Make sure someone is home during that time...You need a box cut open on one side so she can get in and out of..Put some towels and put a heating pad UNDER the box not in the box you could burn the pups. I knew because Lola was pacing and could not get comfortable..Next thing I Knew she was pushing..Place them in the box and you may need to help her...Lola did not tear the bags open on two pups...They would have died within 2 minutes if I had not been their to tear open and start massaging the pups to breath....Have a plan to rush her to the vet if needed.... Let me know if I can help you out if you need to..... |
