Any idea how old these dogs are and how many litters the females have had? Do you know if any have had c-sections? It sounds like you may have gotten them "on clearance" from a backyard breeder who may have already bred them as much as they should be bred. You'll need to get them all thorough physicals from your vet if they haven't been to the vet regularly. I suspect they all may need dentals. You may find that instead of making money from them, they may cost you money.

It appears to me that many are against kennels (I used to have this impression too) because of the awful ones we here about, or substandard ones we have seen. One could always do a search in this forum and see a couple pictures of some living quarters.

| I honestly don't know what to say....seriously... literally living in the backyard??? I really hope you have brought them inside but I'm really worried about this situation. I'm really worried about any puppies born from this situation and the families that will buy them. Breeding is not an easy business to make money. The only reason anyone should breed is to improve the breed, breeding the best examples possible...because they love the dogs and the breed. Breeding should never be done to make money (reputable breeders don't make much if anything) or just because you want your dog to have a litter. How much knowledge do you have of the Yorkshire Terrier? Do you know the standard by heart? Do you know what to look for in a dog to know if it's of quality to breed? Do you know what health tests must be done before breeding a dog? Do you know how common health problems are in this breed? Do you know that yorkies are being extremely overbred and most don't meet the standard anymore? Do you know how many unwanted dogs are euthanized in shelters each year? If you breed, please please please health screen your dogs before you even consider breeding them. Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined. It is WAY too common. Please bile acid test your dogs to make sure they don't have it...and you really need to know that all of the dogs in their lines are free of liver shunt up to 10 generations back as they could still be carriers. You also need to have them check for luxating patellas...this is way too common as well and costs thousands of dollars to surgically correct and is very painful for the dog. You also need to check eyes, ears, thyroid, hips, heart, kidneys, etc. Blood panels need to be done, a good physical exam must be done, and all of these things must be checked for and ruled out. If ANY of these issues are found (and I guarantee you that LP is a big possiblity) do NOT breed these dogs. Please please don't pass on genetic problems...it causes so much heartache for the family that buys the puppy, not to mention pain for the dog. I have a good friend that has recently spent almost $10,000 to fix her yorkie's genetic problem. I know others that have spent thousands to correct Luxating patellas. I know dogs that have died from renal failure, liver disease, diabetes, etc. Don't pass that heartache onto a family. Breeding is a HUGE responsibility and as a breeder, you have the responsiblity to only breed 100% healthy dogs. Also, just because you have a male and female doesnt mean they should be bred. They need to be excellent examples of the breed. A breeder doesn't have to show, but their dogs need to be "show quality"...meeting the standard and being beautiful examples of the breed. Pet quality dogs should not be bred. If your dogs don't clearly meet the standard, they don't need to be bred. I would never ever buy from a breeder that keeps their dogs in their backyard. No way No way. I'd RUN in the other direction. I also would never buy from someone breeding to make money. Anyway...I think my signature explains well how I feel about BYB's

I am so glad that you have decided to bring them inside!!! You know you could turn out to be an ANGEL for these furbabies!!! It sounds like they came from what is known as a backyard breeder who only treated them as breeding machines. It is probably hard for you to comprehend the extent of what they have been then through. It also sounds like you really didn't understand that breeding can be very expensive and requires lots of training. We ALL would love to make a little extra money to support our families but breeding Yorkies is not the way to do it. So I think your intentions were good but PLEASE consider another way to make extra money for your family!!! Please, please consider just loving and pampering these furbabies as so deserve!!! Again, you could turn out to be the ANGEL that saved them from the horrible environment that they came from. I know you bought the furbabies to breed but perhaps you will reconsider and either keep them as family pets or find them new homes with loving wonderful families!!!! Again, I am very glad that you brought them inside. Hopefully, you will find all the answers you need on YT.

| IF, in fact, you are telling the truth and not just saying this to smooth ruffled feathers, you will find tons of help here and even those of us that had to be blunt with you will be here to help. you have been given great advice and i hope you have learned from it. You mentioned belly bands, those are great. Make sure you keep his private area clean tho and the bands washed up. Also, it would be smart to invest in some washable peepads since they are kennel dogs, they will be more likely to use these. here is where I get mine. http://www.valethics.com/ |

| I know a lot of people might get upset with me, BUT to get an animal, especially a little yorkie to place it OUTSIDE in the elements, for the sole purpose to make a dollar is sick! I am sorry, but these little dogs DO NOT BELONG OUTSIDE! |

| I agree, and maybe should have chosen my words more carefully, as I am a little upset about the yorkies in the backyard thing! I do not mean that people that breed for money are sick, as we all here would not have our babies. What I mean is if the sole purpose of breeding is for the greed of money, and therefore leaving a yorkie in a backyard, or other conditions that we would not want to be in, than that is sick! People that breed just for the dollar and no care for the dogs are sick! |
