Even if you have a purebred dog this does not give you the right to breed it
I'm saying who gives these people the right to tell people that have purebreds and want to breed them, that they shouldn't..??

How about the people that own dogs that are suffering from genetic defects or have died from them because some byb decided to breed their purebred dog? How about those that volunteer at shelters and with rescue and have to deal with all the unwanted puppies that were born to purebred dogs? How about vets that constantly treat dogs born with genetic defects and have to euthanize unwanted purebred dogs?

I'm NOT saying these dogs that you want to breed, shouldn't be tested, these people make it sound like only a select few should be able to breed..I have never and will never let someone tell me what to do..I know about puppy mills, I know about byb, I know a lot more than you seem to think I do..And yes, there are a lot of people that shouln't breed...I bred a dog one time, that was enough for me, all 4 of my pups got great homes, and lived very long lives and never had any health issues..would I do it again??? NO, because I love my dogs too much to take a chance of something happening to them during delivery..Maybe these people should go to each state and decide who can and who can't breed their dogs..:rolleyes:

25% of the dogs turned into shelters are purebreds. Eleven years ago the AKC estimated that 70% of all purebred dogs are produced by backyard breeders, not puppy mills. Can you imagine what that figure is today with all the new "alternative" registries that cater to backyard breeders?

Do the math. Where do you think the majority of purebred dogs who end up in shelters are coming from?

I DO agree with that but I DON'T agree with the statement that ANY breeder who doesn't have ALL their dogs evaluated by a show breeder and sells to pet homes is a BYB. (Not pointing fingers at anyone in particular, just my thoughts after reading several recent posts.) I'm sorry, I just DON'T consider myself that. That's a negative connotation and a "label" in some cases. Yes, I DO think that there are many BYBs and puppymills now, WAY too many...but to me that doesn't include people like me, who raise all their dogs INSIDE their home and breeds for quality standard pups, and who DOES NOT do it for money. I have never ONCE thought "hey I'll make some extra cash breeding, might as well." Not everyone can start showing immediately. I would love to do it in the future, but it's not right for me at this time. However, I don't feel that I'm doing anything wrong, and I stand by my decision to breed. I'm doing it for the love of this breed and the puppies that come from my dogs are excellent quality. I don't sell to just anybody. I'm probably one of the pickiest people you'll ever meet about where my dogs go, and you'll find very few breeders who care about and love their dogs as much as I do.

I'd also like to state that a "BYBer" can also have their dogs inside. How many times on this forum that we've read about people entering the house to such awful conditions. Matted up dogs, urine and feces everywhere. Several dogs in cages or having "run of the house". Most people think a BYBer has dogs only in the backyard. It's their ethics and care of dogs (among other things) that make them a BYBer.

This is a subject that all are not going to agree on....many have stated their opinions and whether or not you agree with it please breed ethically and responsibly. Do the necessary testing and try and elimate health issues. The only way to do that is to KNOW YOUR LINES frontwards and backwards.
If you are a buyer do your homework and if you come across a breeder that doesn't do what you think is right then find another breeder. It doesn't matter how many times you argue your point some just won't get it or listen and I am not intentionally trying to make this comment to hurt anyone. Let your conscience be your guide!
If someone calls me and they don't want to abide by what I expect then by all means look elsewhere wont' hurt my feelings at all....just know if you don't purchase from a reputable breeder you do take your chances. Health issues may have not come out of your lines "YET" but if you don't know them frontwards and backwards then there will be that possibility and I hope those breeders do the right thing by their breedings.
Again, this is not by any means trying to be mean or rude. This is all I'll say on this subject.....Most know how I feel so no need going back over it!

:thumbup: I just wish more would health screen before they breed. Too many yorkies with genetic defects and illnesses. Before you breed, please make sure you are only breeding healthy, sound dogs. It's not fair to the dogs or their owners for them to be born unhealthy

Health screenings/genetic testings is at the top of my list in things I expect from a breeder.

I didn't read through this whole thread, it's a lot of pages! But I have a question, I don't know if it's already been asked so just tell me if it has.

Do you have any breeding experience? I'm just wondering because if you want to become a breeder, buying 4 dogs right of the bat for breeding seems a little too overwhelming.

Pretty much everything else I've wanted to say has already been said in the first page, but I also want to add that I wouldn't buy from someone who kept all their dogs outside either. Dogs are family members, and I would never keep my family outside.

Not to mention how scammers always say "God Bless You", and are sooo "religious", :rolleyes: Don't they know stealing is a sin?

Once you and your family spend some quality time with them in the house you will see how much personality they have and how much they hated being outside!! Good luck at the vet tomarrow, I hope everything goes good:) Please update us.

I would also like to commend you on taking the advice of so many passionate YTers!! I think that you showed you are willing to learn and change your ways with more knowledge. I hope that you will continue to ask questions about breeding, there are so many helpful and knowledgable breeders here, and change your mind on making $$ on these precious little ones.

:thumbup: Just one more honest comment to niki35010. As it doesn't sound like these dogs have been inside dogs :( before now, there could be some frustration during the transition and adjustment period. Just in case, please know that there are people here that can help with that period through good advice and plain ol' support. Just don't want to see your good deed undone out of frustration. :)

It cost the same amount of money to breed top quality dogs as it does to breed pet quality dogs. Why not put all that time and effort into finding some great foundation stock?

I've looked at a lot of websites and many of the sires and dams are not show/breeding quality (which are one and the same). If a dog is not worthy of an AKC championship, it is not breeding quality either.
