Absolutely without a doubt a person has the right to breed their dog. But the question is "why are they breeding their dog?"

I usually never get into the breeding part of things but i want to say to this i disagree 100% If that were the case. Then there are alot of us on here that would not have our babies that we have grown to love very much. And i don't believe that would stop them from ending up in shelters either. Because there are to many people out there that get a puppy and no matter how much is paid for it the new wears off or it is to much for them to deal with. And off to the shelter they go.:mad:

Actually, that's not true. A reputable breeder always includes a clause in her contract stating that if for some reason the owner can't keep the dog, it must be returned to the breeder. It's one of the hallmarks of a reputable breeder, the commitment to a puppy for life.

That quote didn't mean it had to have it's AKC championship it just said worthy of it. Breeders should breed to the standard and a good representation of the breed not a pet quality dog that's why it's called PET QUALITY! And in my contract it says if for some reason you can't keep your yorkie it's to come back to me PERIOD!!

Believe me, there are a lot of people that DON'T get back with the seller, I know people that have that contract, and the breeder never finds out the buyer either sold the puppy or took them to a shelter..so, don't believe that all people abide by those contracts..haven't you ever heard about broken contracts??

Everyone who breeds dogs does it for a variety of reasons. Some do it strictly for the money without any concerns of the welfare of the breed, other truly love the breed, do their homework and breed for the pure pleasure and desire to create beautiful loving companions or show dogs that they can share with other, if they make a little money fine, but they hope to a least break even. To many breeders, breeding just came naturally because maybe they were raised around dogs and maybe their parents raised dogs or even showed dogs. I would say the majority of breeders start as back yard breeders or small home breeders and develop from there. Often people breed their little pets thinking they just want to keep a puppy out of their beloved pet and many find it rewarding and others find out the hard way that it is not always so easy to breed dogs. Not everyone is cut out to be a dog breeder or even a dog owner for that matter. Just like in people, there are some that should never have children because they don't take the time to care for them properly. We should be here to educate dog owners on the proper way to breed and raise dogs, not everyone will agree on every issue but we should continue to try to get our points across but do it respectfully. Some people do things we disagree with because they did not have mentors and those people can change if we gently guide them and don't scare them off.

That is great and i think every breeder should have that clause. But i have seen it happen. The owners take the puppy to the shelter instead of back to the breeder like they had agreed to when buying it. It is wrong and something needs to be done about these people but it does happen :(:mad: .


And i am sorry but i still do not agree 100% because if that was the case then i wouldn't have my little Max. I love him with all my heart and could not live without him. He is PET QUALITY and the love of my life. But i guess that is why they say everyone has a right to their own opinion ;).

It's ok not to agree with everyone :) Of course reputable show breeders will have a pet quality yorkie in a litter unless they are kennel blind LOL...Of course you love your baby who doesn't! I have several pet quality yorkies that I wouldn't consider breeding because that is just what they are pet quality and I love them dearly :)

And to answer another poster I always keep in contact with my puppy owners and to be honest they are now my friends. You just have to pick and choose where your puppies will be placed and so far I've been so lucky and hopefully will contiue to be lucky if and when I place a pet yorkie into a pet home.

Oh don't feel that way...you are not the only non-breeder posting on this thread...along w/ people who don't breed and people learning about it. You're opinion and views matter just as much as everyone else's. You have no idea how much breeders appreciate dedicated, loving pet owners like yourself--you are part of the 'big picture' too.:)

besides there aren't many yorkies in shelter's in this area anyway because of our resuce group. The shelters call and we go get them.

Most of us that have our pet quality dogs, don't breed them anyway..we just love them. With Ginger, I could have bred her if I wanted too, and I thought about it, even asked my hubby, but, decided, even though in my eyes, I think she could have been show quality, I knew, if I were to breed her and possibly lost her, I couldn't have lived with myself. The thing is, no matter how much anyone argues over this issue, it doesnt' matter what anyone on here says, people are going to continue to breed, even non standard yorkies..

Well you sound like one great breeder :) :thumbup: It is wonderful that you keep in touch with all your puppies and their new parents:). You know if the show breeders all had the pet quality pups fixed before they were adopted that would be great ;) . I know i would have loved it if Max had been done before i got him.Then maybe that could cut way down on pet quality breeding on purpose:thumbup: . From what i have read and learned so far the poorer bred the worse health problems the poor little things have :( So i am all for stoping that completely! Good luck with the continuing success it sounds like you are doing a wonderful job:)

You are absolutely correct and that is what infuriates me to no end! And you are again right doesn't matter how much we argue over it some just won't listen to good advice either and that is why yorkies are #2 in the most popular standings because of supply and demand and with supply and demand comes badly bred animals no matter what breed it is!
Please do not take this personally LOL....I just try and educate as much as possible.

You are right--because there are many, like you have pointed out, there are many who see it as 'their right' and take the whole "who made you God stance." There are many set in their ways, determined to do what they want and refuse to listen to reason and be bossed around because 'God gave them a mind to have their own opinions' and continue to crank out pups for money in mills.
All those who truly do "get it" on a larger scale can hope to do is continue to educate, point these things out and hope that it at least sinks in for some.
