When you breed your dog does it change their personallity at all?

I have thought about breeding a little bit but my husband doesn't like the idea. He thinks it will make the dog act different. I wouldn't want to breed him more than once either. I would only do it once and get on of the babies out of the litter for a friend for him other than our great dane. Is it a good idea? Is it a bad idea? Is it unfair for the dog?

What can you tell me???

First, I just want to say Welcome to YT!!!!!

If you are only breeding him one time I would not do it and it would be unfair to him.

It can very well change the behavior of your male it depends on the dog. They will hump, mark and be constantly concentrating on one thing only, breeding with a female. Not all males do this when bred but you are taking a good chance that this will happen.

There is also alot that goes into breeding. Such as testing. Your male will need alot of tests such as checking the heart, eyes, knees and liver. Have a bile acid test and brucellious (sp??) test.

I would just neuter him and enjoy having and loving him the way he is now.

I've always thought it did. I think it keeps them younger and more people oriented if they aren't bred. That's just my opinion. I will NEVER breed one of my animals, it's just a personal choice...because there are already so many out there that do it.

Males??? Yes, they start marking all over the house. My once nice couch now stinks of dog urine. It's disgusting and I need to get a new couch next year.

Females??? My girl stopped playing like she use to. It's almost as if she's too grown up to play now.

Gee........there must be other reasons to Breed? or more reasons to Nueter! I have to bite my tongue really hard on this one!

I think the answers you are getting are pretty typical. Most people here don't breed their pets. And - I think "pets" is the key word. We believe in neutering and spaying our animals. And - then feel that the people who should be breeding are the ones who have the exceptional little animals that meet the standards of the breed very well - and are breed with other Yorkies who also meet the standards very well.

Seems to be that a lot of the reasons that people want to breed their little dogs just "don't cut it" here.... getting another pet for themselves - getting another little dog like their own because they love it so much - and often just wanting the experience of having puppies, especially for their children, etc.

But - in the end - it's a personal choice. Just be sure to give it a lot of thought and be a responsible pet owner.... read more and learn more about breeding. (It's not all sunshine and roses!!!!!)

That was well said......and I know I promised to bite my Tongue, but it seems like alot of people/owners are Breeding for too many wrong reasons? You own your Yorkie and you have every right to do what ever you want with him or her. From what I'm hearing alot of you are buying "Pet Quality" Yorkie's and deciding to Breed them later on......seems to me that, that is not something you decide in the end it should be done from the beginning by purchasing a
"Breeding or Show Quality" Yorkie, one that would represent the AKC. Standard or as close as possible to it? By doing Research, Testing and studying the genetics & Bloodlines it takes alot of work & effort! It seems to me that if you Breed the Best you will produce the Best? Even if you are only Breeding for Friends & Family, I've heard that many times from my own Sisters and Mother even, but when it comes down to it, most of the time they never really want a Yorkie too, especially after they find out how high maintenance thay are? My Sister waited 2 yrs. and finally got a Yorkie from a major Pet Store, on Mother's Day as a surprise from her Husband b/c he got tired of hearing her nag @ him! Well she regrets it now, since I have had a Litter of 3. Well her Husband didn't mind paying $2,000.00 to the Pet Store, but he definetly wouldn't have paid me that money - since I am "Family"?

do lots and lots of research before you think of breeding. type in breeding in the research box up at the top and you will find lots and lots of threads on this subject.
My opinion is, not to breed him just to get a puppy out of him. When you bought him, was he bought for a pet or to breed? Makes a big difference.

well my scampi never changed after he bred with my sasha (wasnt planed) but then i was lucky with him as he was such a good boy with not marking and was house trained within 1 or 2 days at the age of 12 weeks. i dont see anything wrong with breeding if you know what your doing and get health checks done, i dont think they have to be breed standard as most people want just pets anyway and wont show them, i also think the breed standard is out of date with yorkies and the health problems yorkies are getting today are down to that, years ago yorkies did not have these problems they have today and there were 2 sizes of yorkie in the showing ring but the larger size was dropped due to the fact that people with the larger normal sized yorkies didnt want to show them. so aslong as you do some research on breeding get health checks done and make sure you know where the other pups are going and will be well cared for i dont see a problem with it. its your choice its your dog.

Well I thank all of you for your advice on the matter. When it comes to yorkies or dogs in general I am kinda a novice so I appreciate all that I have learned from this site thus far. I had no idea that a person had to chose if they wanted there yorkie to be one or the other, "family pet" or "breeder dog".
I am also a little surprised by the "bite my tongue on this one....." attitude. Forums are a great place for people to share their experiences with one another and for people who have yet to experience anything receive some advice from people who have been through it. I think, when a member "bites his or her tongue" when a newcomer asks a reasonable question, it defeats the purpose of a general forum.

That being said, I now have an idea of which path I want my yorkie on, and thats a family pet. Thanks
