| ![]() Hey everyone.. It's been awhile since i've been on here... but I need a boost talk to make me feel better about this.. soooo... i might get yelled at about this.. But it's ok.. But I haven't got Lucy fixed yet.. Mostly because my vet didn't rush me into it.. Which gave me time to think .. Oh how i wish they didn't do that.... with my cats i got them fixed right away! (they are both boys) and minnie our familys rat terrier (who is a girl) we never got her fixed.. i was a kid then so it wasn't my decision and she never had puppies) she is also 12 years old and is pretty healthy besides a few normal things (arthritis and a cataract) ok so let me cut to the chase.. sooo.. no i dont want to breed Lucy.. this is not in my intention AT ALL.. but i am very nervous about her getting fixed! i dont know why.. maybe because i dont know much about it.. but when my boys (the cats) got fixed it seemed like such a super easy procedure.. then i feel guilty doing that to her.. i mean i know i am going to make the appointment this week.. but i just need a pep talk.. lol some of you might think it's silly for me to be stressin out over this and some of you might think im horrible for questioning it.. but i'm just speaking my mind.. ohhhhh and please dont think i would ever breed Lucy intentional.. because everyone who knows me knows.. there is NO WAY i could ever sell puppies... i would end up keeping them all lol.. and NOW that is something that i just can not do sooo no breeding here!! |

Your Lucy is ready for her spay - get an appointment set and drop her off. Buy a kiss-e collar from Mom to Hot Rod here on YT and Lucy will be all set. You might want to read the sticky about anesthesia in the health section here so you can learn about the kinds that are safest for toy breeds. I hope this helps ![]()

| ![]() It's not silly to worry. I cried like a baby when I dropped off Max to be neutered. ![]() Just make sure to have pre-op bloodwork done and discuss the anesthesia protocol with your vet. There is a sticky post in this health section about both bloodwork and anesthesia. Best wishes to your girl and you.

| ![]() He hun.. thats exactly what it is.. her going under that makes me soo nervous..i'm going to school for vet tech but i have yet to learn about this subject.. i mean shes sooo tiny and things go wrong with people who weigh way more than she does.. i guess it is not a questionable conversation because i have to do it.. because if she ever got pregnant her risk at giving birth would be WAY higher.. it just sucks .. its like putting your baby into surgery.. does anyone know what exactly they do? i mean they have to cut her open right? ![]() Last edited by JolieJean; 09-18-2011 at 05:38 PM. |

| ![]() Yes, the surgeon makes a small incision and removes the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus. It is more invasive than neutering a male, but many females bounce back just as quickly as males.

| ![]() Focus on all of the positives and all of the successful surgeries that are done each day. It's never fun having to put our little ones through a procedure (I cried again when Max had to have laser on his eyelid), but once the big day is over, you will be glad it is done. ![]()

| ![]() I was the same way with both of my girls. I was so nervous about it. But I knew it had to be done. Rosie had hers done at about 7 or 8 months old. She was a tiny little thing. And Mikki just had hers done about a month ago. She is 3 1/2 lb and very petite. She had a very tiny incision and bounced back quickly. I think it is ok to be nervous about it. Maybe talking to your vet will ease your mind. I think you will be glad you did it once it is all over with.

| ![]() The risk of pyometra and mammary cancer from not spaying is greater than the risk of serious anesthetic complications. Just make sure to talk to your vet about the things listed on the anesthesia sticky. Pup is given an exam. Bloodwork is done at this time (or preferably a few days before so it can be sent out). An IV could be placed anytime now. Fluids could be started. Drugs may also be given at this time (premed) to allow the vet to use less gas anesthesia. Then if propofol or the like is given, that would be happening. Pup is intubated (to hold the airway open and give anesthesia + oxygen). Monitoring starts. Pup's feet are gently tied out of the surgery area. Area is clipped and draped. Eye dropped are put in (anesthesia dries them out). Tech is right there to monitor the pup (heart, respiration, temp, etc.). Vet makes the incision, does a series of things (pulls ovaries and uterus out, ligates, checks for bleeding, etc.) and then closes. Anesthesia is turned off (unless they need to pull baby teeth which doesn't take long uusally). Drape comes off. Area gets wiped off. Pup goes to recovery and is monitored constantly while waking up. The spay itself takes about 10 minutes plus time to close. It is an invasive abdominal surgery, but it's also a surgery that your vet probably has done many times. There is always risk from anesthesia, but it is very minimum compared to that of leaving her upspayed. My liver compromised 6 year old did just fine. Try not to worry too much.

| ![]() Nala, my girl, bounced right back that night. We had to keep her on her pain meds so she stayed calm and didn't rip her stitches. If you can't get her a blow up collar or the kind that Wylie's mom sells def get a baby onesie so she doesn't bite out her stitches. Bandit, the boy...super simple proceedure, whimpered around for days. He milked it like crazy. Don't worry about it. It's better for your baby girl in the long run. I'll be stressing when I put Bandit under in a couple weeks for his dental, but I know it's for his own good, so I have to do it. Sending hugs! |

Would never want to see another one of my babies go through that. Abby had a very small incision and bounced back very quickly.

| ![]() i am nervous as hell to put Peppermint under to get her spayed because she is so tiny. but the risk of having her not spayed is worse for me. an accidental pregnancy would not only be devistating to me morally (pet overpopulation is a huge problem) but i am sure she would die if she ever had to deliver puppies!!! not a risk i would ever even consider taking as males will do whatever they can to get to a female in heat. |

| ![]() Ziva's spay was easy, I asked the vet to glue the incision and you cannot even find it! She had 7 teeth removed and was actually more comfortable once they were pulled, the gums retracted almost immediately.I think the worst was the pain meds, she seemed so wobbly, and wouldn't eat- did much better without them. She can be a handful now- I can't imagine her hormonal! ![]() |

| ![]() I waited until Uni was almost 4 years old bc of the same reason as you! I was so nervous to do it, but never wanted her to have puppies. I finally found a vet I love and they did her surgery. I had bloodwork done a few days before hand. She was fine by the next day. It was the BEST decision I ever made for her. Also she was such a picky eater before, now she eats like a champ! So much less stress for me now. I also cried like a baby when I dropped her off. ![]()
