Reminder-Micro chipping could save the day

Last night my husband and I stopped at Petco and saw a cute little male yorkie on a leash accompanied by a woman and her young daughter. They were buying dog food. I said what a cute little yorkie and she asked, "Is this a Yorkshire Terrier?" "I said yes, you didn't know?" Strange I thought. She told us that the yorkie just ran into their house when they opened the door and she wasn't sure what kind of dog it was but they were becoming quite attached. I told her to check for a microchip and that the little guy was obviously loved by someone because he so was well groomed and appeared healthy. She said she would check for a chip. I told her to check with a vet to have him scanned, to report it to the local humane society and run a found ad. I think I was sounding rather pushy at this point. The worker at Petco said she came in to buy food and to see if they had a scanner so I hope she will follow through. The worker said, well that little girl sure is crazy about the dog and I said well somewhere there may be a little girl with her heart broken and missing that little dog. Just a reminder that micro chipping could make a huge difference of whether your dog may be returned to you or not.

Well good for you for speaking up. So many people seem to think finder's keepers when comes to pets. It's great that you can look after a dog while you are trying to find the owner, but please try to find the owner. Microchips can help, and hopefully an honest person will find the dog. For all of those who say, my local shelter will kill the dog, you can call the local shelter and learn their policy, many will allow you to post pictures of the lost dog on their bulletin board and foster the dog, so if someone calls in they will know where to find the dog. If your local pound doesn't allow fostering, help change the law.

Anyway, MI Yorkielover, I'm glad you up and maybe this lady's conscience will start talking to her too.

I am sure her temptation is great especially with her young daughter wanting to keep him. He was the sweetest little guy maybe three years old. I told her just I knew someone was looking for him. Who knows, there might even be a reward. I have been thinking about it since last night and I hope I poked her conscience. I guess I'll never know how it turns out and that kind of bothers me.

It's easy to be honest when we aren't tempted! She could teach her daughter an important life lesson.

My local shelter allowes for this. I've done this twice when finding dogs. and tecently, My teen daughter came home a few days before christmas with a yorkie in her arms. Luckily there was a collar with a little pink tag that had a # on it. It turned out that they were visiting the family at Christmas and their little one got our of the fence. They werre soo happy to get her back!

Been there... Expect this one yorkie that I speak of had no microchip, and was unhealthy.. Bad dental issues, and gaurding behaviors . We did the best we could to find the rightful owners , everything. We were not planning on keeping her, we could not , even though I did go back and forth with the idea. However the yorkie made the choice for us, after she got well enough, she began fighting really badly with our other two.. The dog fights were awful.
i had posted about this yorkie in the past but got a lot of grief from some YT'ers. Even trying to track me down , and the accusqations never seemed to stop.
Well that one yorkie was adopted out , and now lives in the mountians. I have a friend who works for animal control , and she told me all the things to do after finding a lost dog. Thankfully the things we did were all right. It was not a pleasant experience either, so I highly doubt I will ever place myself in that position ever again.
I hope that family tries to find the owner of the male yorkie, he might live close by, and got turned around , running into the wrong house.
My vet onoly charges $30 for a microchip. That is well worth the money .

Wow!!! I hope they find his original owner. I can't even imagine just keeping a dog without trying to find the original owners. So sad. I can only hope if Jackson were ever to be missing from me that they would call the number on his tag or scan for a chip first. Gosh it makes me sick thinking about it
