| ![]() I am a new member to this forum. This is my first post and I would like to tell you a bit about us and the help this forum has provided. My wife and I are fulltime RVers. We began fulltime on Oct. 2007. We travel in a Heartland Bighorn fifth wheel trailer. When we started traveling fulltime we took our german shepherd labrador cross with us.. He was about 10 or 11 years old at the time and he loved to travel. In November 2008 we found a tumor on his spleen and due to his problem with hip dysplasia and age, our vet suggested that we put him down because he would have a problem getting up and would be in much pain. We did not want to do this, but could not let him suffer. After a number months my wife and I were looking around for a new companion and wanted a smaller dog to travel with us. While in Elkhart IN we found the Homeward Bound pet rescue near South Bend IN, and a wonderful Yorkie named Trevor. We had been looking at a number of rescue dogs that would fit into our family. When we saw Trevor we had to go find him. After about a week or so we were given the go ahead to adopt him. June 13, 2008 we took him home. He has been a great addition to our family. The only things we have had a problem with is he has a problem eating out of a bowl and house training. He was from a puppy mill. My wife feeds him by hand. Lately he has not been eating very well and we have become worried. This morning about 4am he woke me up shaking very hard. I thought he might need to go outside to potty. When we came back in he was still shaking but thought he might be cold (we are staying outside McKinney, TX. Temp is about 28*). When we got up again this morning he was shaking and listless. He did eat and seemed to be better. I went on the internet and looked up "Yorkshire shaking". I came up with this forum. I found out that the symptoms could be hypoglycemia. This is Sunday and the vets are closed now, but he is doing better, I think because he ate a good meal his morning. We also gave him about a half tea spoon of honey. He is back to his happy self. On Monday we are gooing to take him to our vet here in McKinney and have him checked out. Being a retired computer tech I use the internet to search out for possible problems and came up reading posts and the FYI on your forum. Thank you for posting this infomration. I am a member of a number of forums and I am looking to add this forum to the ones I read almost daily. If your intrested, here are a few pictures of Trevor from when we got him until about Sept of last year. My Avatar is him just last October in Spring Texas at a Rally. Thank you again. May God Bless each and every one of you. BC

| ![]() Well welcome to YT.... I also learned lots of interesting info on this site.... yes these dogs do suffer from hypoglycemia... and they need there sugar level to go back to normal... I give my lil guy syrup when I see he is like that... he loves syrup... I even give him a very small pancake sometimes with syrup when I make pancakes for the whole family.. he gets one too..lol... ![]()

| ![]() Isn't that such a frightening experience. I am glad things worked out so well. I wonder how many owners saved their little ones from learning something on this forum. I know I did. I woke up one morning and thought it slightly odd that our puppy wasn't awake yet but figuring she was just over tired I didn't want to bother her but then got to thinking what if something is wrong. When I went to check on her in her crate I was horrified to find her nearly unresponsive!! I nearly panicked but was able to get myself under control enough to remember about the low blood sugar I had learned about on here. I grabbed the corn syrup and rubbed some in her mouth several times and just kept rubbing and gently shaking her to try to get her to respond. She was so limp. And of all days we were having a bad snow storm and I couldn't even get out of the drivewayto take her to the vets. After 15 minutes or so of doing this she seemed to come around a little. As soon as she seemed able too, I put tiny bites of soft food in her mouth. She eventually came around more and more but it took almost all day for her to start acting like herself again. She slept a lot!! As I write this, I can still see and feel her in my hands even now. I really thought she was going to die in my arms. I will never forget it. But I also will never forget that it was this forum that really helped me save my baby's life. I am so thankful for all that I have learned. And I feel truely blessed that my little girl is still with us. |

| ![]() Bob and Pat......welcome to YorkieTalk......a site with lots of information to help us all become better Yorkie (pet) owners. So glad Trevor is doing better. You mentioned that Trevor is a rescue. I have one rescue who has struggle eating out of a dish since I got her about 11 yrs. ago. Finally, about two months ago I removed her collar with its tags and now she willing eats out of her bowl. Hate it that I wasted so much of her precious life by not realizing what the problem was. If I'm having trouble getting one of mine to eat, I add mashed green beans and a little of the bean juice or some sodium and fat-free broth. If it's tummy upset problems I give some chopped cooked chicken and white rice for a couple days. Trevor is a darling little Yorkie. Sooo cute! Looks great with his trim. Love the photo where Trevor and pat are sleeping. So sweet. Might I suggest, though, that you consider using a harness instead of hooking the leash to his collar? There's a possibility of damaging the trachea if he pulls too hard on his leash when you use a collar. ~Joanne~

| ![]() Hello again.. We took Trevor to the Emergency Vet. They checked him and told us he did not have hypoglycemia. He is doing well now. Hoping that he also does well through the night. Going to take him to our vet tomorrow. Thank you for all the responses. I look forward to the posts on this forum. BC
