Hair Falling Out??? Shedding?

I wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the Grooming section, but I opted for here.

As we all know, Yorkies don't shed. However, the other day when I took Tatum's dress off of her, I noticed that it was covered with hair Almost like your shirt would be covered in hair if you were holding a cat.

Then tonight, when I bathed her, I noticed that there was hair in the sink, again, hair like you would see from a cat shedding - something of that sort.

She doesn't have any bald spots or anything like that - it's not like it's falling out in GOBS or handfuls or anything, but she IS definitely shedding and I have no why.

I have never ever noticed her hair doing this before (well, that's because it hasn't...) and was wondering if any of you here have ever had babies that did this? And what the heck causes it?? Oh and not to mention, how do you get it to STOP?

Chester done this several years ago, does your dog have allergies to something, how often do you bathe her, what kind of shampoo. Chester gets salmon oil on his food every night very good for the skin and coat and allergies. I also use all soap with no perfumes and dyes and same with the bounce dryer sheets especially if she sleeps with you. I dont bathe chester any more often that I have too. I have to use tearless shampoo and I have to rinse him really well. What kind of food is she eating and the ingredients,does she have dandruff, you can brush her to get the oil glands going again.

Oh no...Tate is worrying her Mama again, that little stinker. Sometimes, ringworm can cause hairloss; and while most ringworm always starts in a "ring" in human, that's less common in dogs - where "patches" can occur instead. Thyroid maybe? I'm pretty sure you tested that before though, right? Malabsorption can also cause hair loss, but you'd often see weight loss too...but maybe not right away. Any meds that she's on that could cause this?

I mean, it could be other skin issues as well - so I wonder if you should have skin scraping and fungal culture. Has her itching gotten worse at all?

Oh, Brooke, I feel so bad for you - I know you don't need another Tate issue on your hands to worry about !

Hi Yes Tatum does indeed have allergies. I don't bathe her nearly as much as I used to because of the allergies. I don't really have a "set" time to bathe her anymore...just whenever I feel she needs a bath, LOL. I used to bathe her every single week, but I don't do that anymore because of her allergies. The only shampoos I ever use on her are Doc Ackerman's Natural Herbal Colloidal Oatmeal Shampoo, EarthBath Oatmeal Shampoo and MinkSheen - although it HAD been a while since I used the MinkSheen on her, but I did use it when I bathed her last night. In the past I have bathed her with it many times before though. Also, she is eating Natural Balance Small Bites Potato & Duck Allergy Formula...but she has been on this for a long time now. She does have dandruff/dry skin - but it's not as bad as it used to be in the past. Her hair is shorter now (she was in full coat about 4 months ago) so I don't brush her as much as I used to because there just isn't near as much to brush, lol...but I will definitely start brushing her again every single day, or maybe even twice a day. She actually likes being brushed, so it will be an easy thing for me to do

Oh Michele you are going to think I am REALLY stupid - but I honestly don't know, lol. I mean they aren't tiny little pieces or anything....so I guess they would be considered longer? Her hair is alot shorter now than it used to be (she isn't in a full coat anymore, although I am letting it grow back). I was over at my moms last night when I bathed her and I didn't have my camera here with me, but I snapped a few pictures with my cell phone and I have posted the pictures below. This was just the hair that got collected in the stopper when I rinsed the hair out of the sink.

Tricksie sheds, it is long pieces, there is nothing on her skin, she is healthy, does not scratch. I brush her everyday and there is hair in the brush, when I bath her there is not much. I have had allergies really bad ever since I got her.
I would worry if it just came on all of a sudden.

Thanks so much Ann...yes she is! I telly you my little girl has it ALL Sigh.

Well I guess it's a good thing that it isn't falling out in patches! I had wondered before if she could have Hypothyroidism, but I asked about it here (not sure if you remember that thread or not?) because Tate is so darn chubby lol...but everyone told me that hair loss is a big symptom of it - and back then, she had absolutely no hair loss what so ever. I never had a test done, but now that she is shedding, I think I am going to. She hasn't lost any weight that I know of (although she needs too! of course I don't want her to lose weight due to her having a HEALTH problem though ). The only medication that she is on now is Hydroxyzine (for allergies/itching). She has been on this for a really long time though. And of course she gets Cosequin every day, but I don't think THAT would cause hair loss?? I will definitely look into having a Thyroid test done and also a skin scraping. Maybe that will give me some answers Her itching hasn't gotten worse, and really the only place she ever itches on her body is around her nose/mouth area - and her ears (she gets re-occurring ear infections because of her allergies) - but I always get those under control with meds.

I wish for once she could have NOTHING wrong - that is all I ask for! My little girl has been through the ringer and back

P.S. - I stopped the Grizzly Salmon Oil, and now I can't even remember why I stopped it (isn't that pathetic? LOL) - wonder if I should start giving this again?

Also, I was giving her Solid Gold Seameal - but I stopped this after a short while because I think it made her itch more - I don't guess this could have caused her to lose hair?

Yes I know I had asked about this in the past because Tatum is overweight, and I thought that maybe she had it...but everyone mentioned hair loss being a big sign of it and back then she didn't have any hair loss. However now that she does, I think I am going to have a test done.

Thanks for your reply Yes, it just came on all of a sudden - which is why I am left so confused and baffled by it. She has never "shed" a day in her life. I am just so confused God I just hope and pray that it is nothing terribly serious I honestly don't know how much more I can take. Here we were, just getting ready to have her LP surgery done, and now I feel like I need to take her in and have some tests done before she goes in for surgery. I know that before her surgery they will do a full blood panel on her, but still. I just feel that there are some tests that need to be done here, first, before anything else - now that this shedding issue has come up

I can't imagine what you are going through. Until Tricksie was a year old, we had problems but nothing like what you are having.

The thyroid test is a good idea. Lacy and rylie lose some hair when I brush and bathe them too...they do lose some hair everyday just like we do and hair will also break off, especially when they wear clothing. It's possible that since you aren't bathing and brushing her as often anymore, that more hair comes out when you do bathe & brush her...whereas before when you did it more often it was just a little over time and not as noticeable. I would have her thyroid checked...but I don't know if I'd jump to a skin scraping unless she is really losing a significant amount of hair, hair is becoming thin in areas, or she develops bald spots. It could be allergies to something too

I'd take her in for A thyroid test. Hair loss, overweight, dry skin, are all symtoms. luckily it can be treated easily.

Thank you so mcuh girl...I appreciate the prayers I just hope that it is something really minor and simple and not another one of the bigger problems that we will have to add to the list
