| Rory's due for her annual vaccines - can someone help me break this down, please? I just got the reminder card that Rory is due for her vaccines. It says she is due: Rabies dog one year vaccination; DHLPP vaccination (I need the help with this one!); Fecal flotation exam. I have read lots on the forum, and I think I have a basic understanding. I want to get her the 3 years rabies vaccine if it is offered in Georgia (anyone know?). I don't know what all the letters stand for in the second vaccination. I believe I can have titers run to see if she has high enough levels in her system still? Rory is 14 months and approximately 9 pounds - not overweight at all, just a BIG yorkie. She does have to get bordetella every 6 months as she attends daycare everyday while we are at work - so I can't skip out on that one. So which ones does she NEED? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My bullmastiff was diagnosed with cancer at 6 and died shortly before his 8th birthday, and I still question what caused him to get cancer at such a young age - I'll never know, and we all did the best we could, but I'm so cautious now that I don't want to put anything in Rory's body that isn't necessary or required by law!

| Georgia requires rabies every year but a few of the counties have exceptions I think. Rabies should ALWAYS be given at a different time than other vaccines...about two weeks before of after the other ones because it is responsible for many reactions (and you can't tell what the dog is reacting to if other vaccines are given on the same day) and too many at one time is harder on their bodies. DHLPP is distemper, hepatitis, leptosporosis, parvovirus and parainfluenza. I would do DHPP as a one year booster and then after that you can pick whatever protocol you want (titering, or vaccinating every three years, or no more vaccines....). Lepto is very controversial and should only be given if absolutely necessary. The vaccine has killed Yorkie puppies. I would prefer to get this in a single if it had to be done instead of in the combo but that is my opinion.

| Thanks! I will go ahead and get her rabies first and then schedule the other four you mention. Are those given as a combo shot, or would they all need to be individuals?

Also, parainfluenza is not a core vaccine but since it is in with most of the combos, it is hard to avoid. Lepto is also now core. That's when I start to look at the risks vs. benefits. I think with a healthy dog, I'd personally give into giving the parainfluenza just because it's easier and I don't think it is a big deal. There is a vaccine that contains only distemper, parvo and hepatitis but I forgot who it is through or if the company is any good.
